Another VRO Question

Hey guys I've got a 2000 Johnson 150 ocean pro. It is pristine well maintained and runs like a sewing machine however recently the air side of the vro pump failed so I rebuilt it using the factory original brp kit. I was very meticulous and very careful and have double triple and quadruple checked the rebuild for some reason the engine is running slobbering rich. Let me tell you I have checked everything I've checked for fuel leaks and air in line have checked for oil leaks and air in line. Just on principle I even set up a 6 gallon tank with a brand new primer ball directly to the engine just to eliminate any air leak possibility. I have hooked up
Up a clear piece of tubing in line with oil and fuel to check for air bubbles and there are none. Right now at idle the pump cycles aproximately every 9 seconds and I can't find if that's abnormally high or not. I really enjoy the VRO because it has served me well for many years and I don't want to have to mix oil.....I'm open for any ideas or suggestions.

Checked float bowls for warpage.--Check valves in the air motor housing in good shape ?--Checked the pulse limiter ?----Does fuel primer bulb go hard ?

Ahhhh... I think you might be on to something. Brand new floats and bowls last year because the bowls were cracked and leaking fuel. Will definitely check the check valve on the air motor side but how does one check the pulse limiter? Maybe ill just replace on principle.

The pulse limiter is a flow fuse for the VRO pump.-----Closes when too much air flows through it.---Clean it with some solvent.------If motor is running too rich I doubt it is a fuel pump issue.----Look for issues with floats an float valves.

And very sorry and I should have specified when I say running slobberingly rich what I meant was way too much oil the thing is smoking like crazy ....the oil mixture looks to be 30 to 1 or greater....dark blue wayyyy to much oil. I apologise for not beam better with my explanation

Again sorry for my lame explanation. Primer Ball is rock solid there is not a fuel pumping issue it is a way too much oil issue

Did you check the main strainer under the airbox. If it leaks air into the gasoline line, too much oil will be injected. The main strainer has an oring and rubber seal.

I did and they were good no leaks. I decided I had enough and I just ordered a brand new OEM vro pump. This thing is 21 years old and someone on another forum said the oil pump is probably shot even though I rebuilt the air and fuel diaphragm section I'll see what happens!

Well It always irritates me when people start a thread and then they never report back whether they solveed their problem or not. I am happy to report after monkeying around with this thing for over year and a half, I bit the bullet and replaced the entire vro pump with a brand new oem one and this thing works perfectly. The engine runs like new starts right up cold or hot and no more smoke. The old pump was pumping about a quart every 6 gallons!

yes that could be the pulse limiter fitting not closing properly. its a really delicate little valve. if its open=too much air= too much oil if im not mistaken

The pulse limiter is a ---FLOW FUSE-----It only closes when there is too much flow of air from the crankcase.-------The pulse limiter is also NOT a check valve.-----It has nothing to do with amount of oil pumped either.

The pulse limiter does nothing.-----It only closes to protect the VRO from high airflow / pressure pulse from the crankcase.----The large plastic VRO pump pieces would crack / blow up from a pressure spike !!!!-----The pulse limiter is not needed for a conventional pump since the parts are smaller and stronger.

ah makes sense to me! so if the limiter gets stuck open and causes pressure spikes, would that tear the air pump diaphram and over - oil because of the volume increase (air)?
