I had a flat on the trailer coming out of the water today just before dark. Had to change the wheel in the parking lot, sure was glad I put anti-seize on the lug nuts when I last serviced the wheel bearings, I would suggest everyone buy a can and do the same. :p

Re: Anti-seize your nuts.

I asked the goodyear service station that was servicing one of my tires to put anti-seize on it and he said it was a really bad idea and that the lug nuts would work themselves loose. He said he had seen it happen. He further said the lug nuts are galvanized (?) and would not rust.

He was a young kid so I don't put a lot of weight on what he is saying but I seem to recall having heard a lot of controversy regarding this practice. What is the definitive word here?

Amir

Re: Anti-seize your nuts.

I have anti-siezed my trailer & car nuts for years. I also anti-sieze each and every car I service (10 - 15 per week) - been doing it for 25 years.

Never, ever, ever lost a wheel. Ever.

The Royal Navy use anti-seize on their Sea Harrier aircraft wheels. Good enough for them... good enough for me.

Re: Anti-seize your nuts.

Agree 100%; anti-seize is a must on wheel nuts and a lot of other fittings on boats and trailers.

Just one word of caution though: if you ever have to heat a fitting to remove it and it's been treated with anti-seize, do it in a well-ventilated area: the anti-seize (depending on the make but is probably similar in most cases) gives off highly noxious gases.

In the UK there are moves afoot to make it mandatory to mark all fittings that have been treated with anti-seize and several large industrial companies already do this.

Still fully agree with using it though!

I can assure the service technician that lug nuts WILL rust.

Thanks monoshock, I'am into preventive maintance and never thought of doing this. I'll do it before my next outing, give me a chance to take a good look at my carlisle's. :)

I firmly believe in it for cars/trucks, but I wonder about galvanic corrosion when using metal based anti-seize on a saltwater trailer?

Keeping lug nuts from loosening on something that just jumps up and down?? Huh?

BB, if you think they just jump up and down you must think they are capable of miracles. A fully armed and fuelled Sea Harrier uses the "Ski Jump" rolling take off technique 'cause it hasn't got enough poke to take off vertically at max weight, but in any event they're all but phased out now so goodbye to another era of Naval aviation.
Also the anti-seize keeps the nuts from seizing not from loosening - it does so by creating a corrosion proof barrier between the wheel studs and the nuts.

Re: Anti-seize your nuts.

If you saw me working on my vehicles, trailer, boat, or atv you would think I had stock in the company. I had a spark plug snap off in an automobile four banger head and all that was left in was the threads you could see right through it. Talk about an expensive tune-up.

I had the same thing happen on a Dodge Caravan V6 on the rear plug. I had to cut a hole in the fire wall to remove the broke plug. What started as a simple tune up turned in to an all day ordeal.

I've always used anti seize on spark plugs, this is the first time that i've heard of it used on lug nuts.

Good semi-trailer mechanics always slather it on. Think of 200 foot lb. torque and rusted nuts. I use on plugs and wheels.

Makes good anti-squeek lube for the hinges on your horizontal garage door panels as well.

Also makes a good anti-squeel backing for brake pads.

I use it on everything. No exception-even mix a very small amount in my grease gun with the usual LM grease.

Re: Anti-seize your nuts.

I use anti seize on most parts but not on my trailer hubs. I slather hubs (front and back)and studs all over with grease and never have a seizing problem in saltwater.
