Any Geologists, amatuer or pro, out there?

As I often do, I was admiring my favorite fishing hole (Lake Of The Woods, MN/ONT) on the 30"X30" sattelite photo that is on my wall.<br /><br />Centered at about 45N, 39E I see a circular pattern, about 10 miles in diameter, that sure looks like the remains of an impact crater.<br /><br />Is this an identified impact site? <br /><br />Is this where muskies originally landed to colonize our planet?<br /><br />Where can I learn more about this site?

not sure, but isn't that area formed by glaciers?

I found another one! Less distinct. It is about 11 miles ESE of the first one.<br /><br />How cool!<br /><br />They either happened after the glaciation or they were not completely obliberated by it.

The patterns on the map of the impacts is fascinating. Most of them seem to be in the center of the country and tend to follow coastlines and/or water.

I went to the site, Revertmastec.<br /><br />Found two identified sites in the general vicinity, but neither is either of the ones I found.<br /><br />Learned to read coordinates off the photo (oops! )<br /><br />The sites I noted are centered at: (from GPS Mapsource)<br /><br />1. N49deg 16', W94deg48'<br /><br />2. N49deg11', W94deg25'<br /><br />Neither is a hole in the earth. Both are centers of concentric circles of geocharacteristics (ridges, islands, etc.). Are there other phenomenae that would cause that?<br /><br />Thanks for your insights.

either impact or glacial... answer is in the<br />surrounding bedrock fractures/lack of.

These features are about 10 miles in diameter, DJohns, and they are circular.<br /><br />An isolated, very large, glacial remain might leave rings of earth as it melted away, I guess.

the impact at chesapeake bay is given credibility for not only the formation of the bay, but as a possible extinctor event, slong the lines of the Chicxulub event, which is generally accepted as the Dino Terminator - Cancun was not a good place to be some 65 million years ago, lol<br /><br />The Sudbury event, 250 km in diameter, (compared to the relatively paltry Chicxulub event, 170 km - at this size, orders of magnitude of impactor force are required even for minor increases in crater size) must have been a real blast, but as it was 2 billion years ago, I wonder if the crust was as fully formed then as now<br /><br />eh, I wonder about too many things as it is<br /><br />like, why does canada take so many hits from these things? Aleuns dont like canucks either? <br /><br />

Thanks, OB and Ray.<br /><br />I do have several books about the lake, including the history quoted in the brochure. None refer to impact sites.<br /><br />The U. of New Brunswick map of impact sites does show one at Shoal Lake, about 12 miles N. of Angle Inlet.<br /><br />I have Emailed UNB asking about the sites.

Isn't that interesting, I have a satellite photo<br />of my favorite lake & surrounding are in my garage<br />JB, I acquired it about 10 years ago at a local<br />flea market.

Well, the University of New Brunswick hasn't replied to my inquiry.<br /><br />I am very sure that these circles are the result of some sort of large events.<br /><br />The image of the photo shown on the site is not big enough to see the features.<br /><br />Any other advice on where I can get info on what these are? I can't imagine that I am the first person to notice them.
