Re: any one into avation?

Got about 170 hrs in a Katana DA20 A-1, Warrior, 172 etc. Highly recommend the Katana for training. Really neat plane to fly. I fly the 80 hp Rotax version (A-1). I've had to lay off because of new marriage, house and business. Right now I'm trying to get another boat in time for this season. I really havent flown much since 9/11. Training is the best part of flying. Just remember that so you can enjoy your lessons. After you get your ticket you realize how much fun it was to be new to the sport.

Have about 60 hours in a trike. 2 emergency landings. 1 forced landing. I'll fly the trike for a few more years and then get me a real plane, although it will still be an ultralight. I'd like something that can handle stronger winds and go faster.

Flying is my passion as well. Been flying the single engine stuff for a while now but my real love is soaring. Been flying sailplanes for over 12 years and can't get enough of it (to my wife's disappointment). JB came to visit last iboats year and I took him up for a ride. Had a great time.

Have often wanted to try flying ultralights, just never had the opportunity. Plus a fear of heights keeps me pretty much below tree level ;)

I've always been a sucker for the Twin engine jobs, ala Piper Senecas.

Does anyone here use X-Plane for a flight simulator?

Re: any one into avation?

The first time I ever flew was in a 1949 Steerman Bi-Plane, my Uncle Chick's. All 6 of his kids are pilots and I have a sister who is a pilot. In the Bi-plane the passenger sits in the front cockpit and the pilot in the rear. We had no radar, no radio, notta. Uncle Chick was an arobatic pilot who performed his stunts all over the south.

He flew me over Rice Stadium then out over some farm land where he proceeded to land on one wheel, he wasn't pleased with that landing so came back down and landed on the other wheel. Little did I know he was buzzing his buddy who had a Tri-Plan, painted red with swastickas on the wings. He joined us up in the air and I had the best experience of my life doing barrell rolls and hammerheads and every other stunt known to man all over downtown Houston. Oh those fly boys are crazy! It was, without a doubt the most incredible experiences of my life and it will always be one of my fondest memories. :)

Wow Ladyfish! Very cool!

I always thought I wanted to learn to fly. I envisioned having experiences like Ladyfish's Then a friend at work took me up in his Cessna for a quick trip to a nearby town for lunch. I was amazed at all of the work envolved, check weather conditions, log flight plans, inspect plane, check a gazillion instruments, talk to tower in garbled Airplanese, fly for 40 min. then find a little speck on the ground where we're expected to land. Whew! And cost... ...I thought mt boat was expensive. My pilot friend had taken all of the expenses envolved in flying and put thim in terms of cost/hr to fly. According to him it cost him about $75.00 per hour to fly his plane. He co-owned the plane with one other person. He said that he had to fly is at least three times a week to make the expense worth it. That's almost $1000.00 per month. Too rich for my blood.

Re: any one into avation?

I am not a pilot, but I wish I was.

Went for rides with a couple of freinds in their planes.

But the best experience flying for me was when I worked for Grumman Aircraft.

Grumman flew us over to the U.S.S. Eisenhower, when she was on her maiden deployment, and caught up with her in the Mederatanian in an E-2C Hawkeye, in the middle of the night, and landed on the carrier.

After spending 14 days on the "Ike", fixing 2 EA-6B Prowlers, and our work complete, it was time to come home.

Well, the Navy wanted the civilians off the boat as soon as possible, and after a nice meal, sponsored by the captain, the other guy that was with me, and myself, were asked to draw straws.

We had no idea what was going on until we were ordered to the flight deck, where the deck officer informed us, that the reason we drew straws earlier, was to determine which aircraft each of us was going to ride back to the USA in, as they only had 2 aircraft that needed to return to the US, a A-6E Intruder, which the other guy got picked for, and a F-14A+ Tomcat, that I got to ride in the back seat of, and the Navy needed to know who was going to be in which plane, so they could set up each plane for us.

All I can say is... WOW WEEEEEEEEE

Best time of my life, next to sky-diving!

Not only did I get a chance to actually build F-14's, but one time only, I actually had an oppertunity to take a ride in one, and be launched from the carrier, which was another WOW WEEEEEEEEE.

Totally awsome!

Even went Mach, even though it was only briefly!

WOW, what a time!

Re: any one into avation?

gaugeguy,

I don't know if I had the need for speed that day, but I'll tell you what, I got it !!

The launch off the carrier was probably the most intense.

As we where waiting to launch, which took a couple of minutes, we were sitting on the catapult, throttles set for take-off, the Tomcat was shaking like mad, there seemed to be some sort of another delay, and we just stayed, ready to launch at any second, I decided, in my infamous wisdom, to relax just a little bit, and guess what, they sent us on our way down the deck.

Talk about getting pinned in your seat!

Being I relaxed that little bit, the handles in front of me, which I was holding onto, suddenly became impossible to reach after my hands were no longer clutching them, pinning me further into my seat, which really isn't a seat, the cushion is your parachute.

We were in the air so fast, I just couldn't explain the experience, it was incredible.

I could go on and on, but I'll save you the boredom.
