Besides that I have seen Jaws like 5 times,LOL and I am sure theres no Sharks in Indiana either.QUOTE]

I dive for lobster and grouper....I don't worry about the sharks. They don't like eating people. Once they rip off a leg or arm they usually spit you out, we taste terrible....YUK!

I remember diving off Kealakekua bay in Hawaii, other wise known as Captain Cook bay and we were at the mouth of the bay in about 40 feet of water, the floor of the ocean drops away to thousands of feet at that point, there was a group of us hanging in the water and writing notes back and forth on our boards, when all of a sudden we were engulfed by a school of fish as they rushed past us. Couldn't figure out what the heck was going on, until we looked down and all of a sudden here was 1/2 dozen Hammerheads coming at full speed! Definitely one to make your heart beat increase!

Well, that's comforting.

When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, I did go diving fairly often and often times came across a shark or two. They never really bothered me. I was always more spooked by Barracuda's. I was told by many people that the Barracuda's were much more aggressive. They certainly seemed that way. The occasional shark or two would for the most part, leave the area I was in. The Barracuda's would not only stick around, they would investigate. And.... They've got some real nasty looking teeth.

For the experts, are Barracuda's more aggressive? I know the type of shark makes a big difference. Just asking in general terms.

Good stories, the hammerheads from what are understand are really not maneaters but I think a guy would still poop his pants at that sight.. I am going to try to go to those mines this year for sure and will definitley take some pics.

It would be a good Family thing too as the dives are not all that long and they have boats down there and you can take boat tours too as a family..

I kinda screwed up last year.I drove right by the Mines entrance on the way to pick up a old motorcycleI bought on the internet and that would have been the time to check it out but we drove straight through and never had the time to stop.

The mines, although in a neihboring state are still about a 8 hour drive for me.Wish they were closer I would be there...

Barracuda's teeth are pretty ominous, then that huge eye that just follows you as they hang almost motionless (aside from the fins) in the water... They generally don't bother people. When your going to be diving/swimming in waters with barracuda, don't have anything shiney on you which could flash in the sunlight. That's their trigger. That's food to them. If one hits you, now there's blood in the water, coming from you. That's as attractive as the flash of sunlight. Ever notice that when you see one, you then realize there are more, and then all of the sudden it seems like they're everywhere?

I'm no expert, but I can accurately answer your question. They are more aggressive than most sharks. Most sharks are not aggressive when it comes to people.

If you have a shiney weight belt buckle, either subdue it or switch to a black or simply non-shiney one. Use a sheath which completely covers the blade of your knife. If the butt of your knife is shiney, subdue it. Anything shiney on your gear can be subdued. I'm not trying to scare you. These are just good precautions.
