Re: anyone else ever get harrassed by drunks on a speed boat?

I also run very( comparatively ) small craft , and , have been in similar situations . While no one has had the cajones to try to physically grab or take control of my vessel , yet ( they would be wiping their butt with a hook if they tried ..) , it is always a possibility .

Good thinking with the flares , I would have let Mr Colt talk to them , untill he was completely out of " breath " ...

I stick to waters that usually preclude the presence of these kind of morons . I.E. the most snag infested , hull ripping waters you could imagine .
It is what the wave makers and gas wasters avoid , where the best fishing to be had is usally found .

On waters that that are open to all manner of idiots , I try to set up in a locale that allows me to fish in relative peace , while holding extreme dangers for any craft that attempts to buzz by in close proximity .

For those unfamilliar with a body of water , these may be hard to find untill you learn the water and develop a bit of evil strategy , but , it pays off in the end .

I call this the rope a dope method . Anyone stupid enough to screw around is going to find themselves the direct victim of their own actions and ignorance of the waters .

Yes, I get my jollies baiting more than just fish , but , I never try to escalate directly . Let the fools make victims of themselves if possible .

Barring this option , it is best to just report the fools to the local constabulary , and , not try to escalate the confrontation .
It may be they desperately deserve to be handed a reality check , but , you have little right to escalate or provoke a confrontation unless they are directly threatening your safety and/or that of your passengers .

A cell phone is great , especially if it has a camera . So are witnesses .
Yes , your local cops and DNR are interested , but , they need info .
They do not like these aholes any more than their victims , but , they need more than just a vague description of a craft and the operator .

I would advise you to go out with a partner or 2 in seperate crafts , but , these type of idiots are random and fishing partners are often hard to come by , especially good ones .

I would say in this situation that his safety was threatened. I would have my gun in hand but not brandishing It just enough so they see it. If they tried to board my boat they would leave in body bags.

That is a ugly story. I feel "blessed" that we are able to putt, putt around on our little 10hp limit lakes down here. It is really sad that you are now "soured" on boating because of this. This world that we live in has gone totally crazy,
my state, Illinois is only one of two that does not have the right to carry a concealed gun, BUT..........I am seriously considering buying a gun anyway. If I was out on a lake with my 81 yr. old mother (which I can't be because she died in jan.) I would like to point a 357 at that fools head and see what he has to say then. It is really sad that this what our world has come to.:(

Yeah, the law's funny that way. You can't carry a itty bitty 9mm, but you can carry a 37mm "flare pistol".....

i was very discouraged to be honest but this forum and all you guys have turned that around!! :)

im awful glad i found this place or i would be lost... had it not been for the guys at the evinrude forum i never would have gotten the pump and tranny going on the boat in the first place. those same guys got me on the right track with the engine performance issues i was having, then after 4 days of working from time i got home from work to the point of passing out on the motor it was running right! so off to the lake... on the way there i had truck problems lol lower radiator hose blew going up a huge hill (third time i ever pulled the boat) and the rear wheels spun out on a very sharp curve on our own coolant... (had no idea why the rear end ended up in the other lane with the boat about jack knifed at 45 mph up hill it felt like hitting an icey patch! that is until the temp started to go through the roof on the trucks gauge and of course there was no where to pull off for like 3 more miles... by the time i got to where i could pull off the engine was knocking and it stalled... as if by magic after it cooled still pointed up hill i was able to trim the hose back and get it back on the radiator then i needed water cause it was bone dry... lol i found a windshield wiper jug and opened the boats drain plug (we had had 3 days of rain and THANK god i forgot to pull the drain plug!!) and was able to get enough water from the hull to fill the radiator... once it was full and cool i hit the key and the old truck fired up (as if my magic) and i drove on to the lake and got on the water and then i ran into those a-holes when i got home that night i wanted to sell the damn thing but after all the stuff you guys have written ill NEVER sell it!!! i have already made me a floating spin their prop net, gotten a new batch of flares and im looking forward to getting her wet again! THANK YOU ALL for changing my mind!!!!

that works if you are dealing with a sane, rational person. In this situation, that would only have escalated it even more so, and probably would have resulted in a full speed ramming, or possibly the other party pulling out multiple firearms and opening fire. Given their behavior already, they probably were drunk &/or high, and as such extremely unpredictable and not really concerned about consequences.

there is a time and place, but this certainly wasn't it.

Nice thought with the flares. I have a strong rope with a 15lb anchor on one end and a smaller anchor on the other.........

If I was in your situation I probably would have thrown the 15lb in the water and tossed the smaller one in their boat - preferably hitting someone hard as they were driving......at the very least it'd give them something else to figure out.

You can bet I'd be waiting for them at the launch ramp. By the time they got there I'd have a weapon of some sort.......that's horse ****.

good thinking on your part, you do have to protect your family and yourself... I'm surprised nobody consider the real possibility of the flare igniting fumes in the boat and exploding, killing 'em all....

Is that self defense? like shooting a guy who breaks into your home and tries to assult you with a bat or knife?

Yes thats self defense .Someone breaks in to my house with a bat, knife or otherwise will end up regretting it .

Wow!
As a long time fisherman (bank and boat) I have seen a lot of bad behavior but that takes the cake and goes way beyond rudeness and straight into threat.

I don't respond kindly to intentional rudeness, let alone threats. That is all I will say about that. ;)

when people do things like that they are looking for a reaction, never give that to them.
look them eye to eye poker faced and show your standing tall, not afraid.
cell in hand go 911 to show them you are reporting this behavior.
not the local boys, you don't know if you can trust them.
those in the other boat just might be a relative or friend and the cops may just want to smooth it over.
911 is documented and there must be a responce.
cell cam or other, show you are documenting this behavior.
the weapon never comes out unless it gets used, never!
just showing you weapon may be the spark their looking for.
set your stratagy bring it out fast with a spit second to aim with both hand.
sight the weapon on their face or throat, as you pull the weapon will drop a little and you will hit their chest or belly.
it's extremey tough to not respond but that i think is what you really have to do.
that's been my stratagy but if i'm wrong i'm all ears and interested.
came back to edit this thing about weapon use as i'm no pro at all.
just an ole viet nam vet that spent most of his time all along the dmz.
have also spent a lot of time down south and people here have a gun in hand before the bottle ever hit their mouth.
most have hunted all their lives and know how to hit their target.
the thought being before playing johny yuma think the other guy may know a whole lot more.

Sounds like he was at the point of being concerned for the safety of himself and passengers and was justified in the rather inventive use of flares. If they had started a fire or explosion, I'd say it was clear self defense.

I agree with some other posters that the use of a weapon, which I do frequently carry onboard, would be a last resort. Had they not stopped after the flare incident, that would have been next. Though I'd probably just aim for the engine and/or lower unit to put them out of commission.

Either way, I'd have definitely got their registration number and found the marine patrol or made a report ASAP. They need to be removed from the water.

will say i'm all over the idea of a few flare guns.
just google up flare guns and you will see one that's an 18 shot.
kind of looks like a tommy gun.
i will stand corrected in respect.
family in the boat?
send em to the bottom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: anyone else ever get harrassed by drunks on a speed boat?

The flare thing sounds brilliant to me, but only because the boat didn't blow up or burn to the water (apparently, we don't actually know do we?). I honestly think if those idiots had been injured you would have been liable, as the story was told.

Obviously I wasn't there, I don't know how close they were getting, how big your boat is, how big their boat was, etc, etc. But it would be hard to prove your life was in danger just from some yahoos boating in circles around you.

Now if they continued time after time to try to get that line on your boat even after warnings I think you would be fine.

As for brandishing a firearm. It should NEVER, EVER even make an appearance until it needs to be used to immediately protect your life. If your plan is to shoot up the boat, you should ever pull the gun in the first place.

In that situation the only point you would be justified in the use of deadly force is if they got that line attached to your boat, or if you were in danger of capsizing. If that was the case with my boat, the last thing I would do would be to waste bullets I need to save my life on putting tiny little holes in the hull that would do nothing. 2 in the chest of the guy with the rope, two in the driver's chest, and if anyone still feels like fighting I'ld have 8 more for them.

The fact is, the best way out of that situation, and 99.9% of all situations, is to do what the houseboat did. Call teh cops, point your boat for home and don't stop until the idiots get bored.

Re: anyone else ever get harrassed by drunks on a speed boat?

Never been harassed on the water mostly drunk or inconsiderate boaters too close for comfort. So I bought a bullhorn for my boat, makes sure you get heard if they wanna come over and play after that I have no reservations in using a hammer on some one endangering me or my family. ( I'd rather make it up close and personal like that over taking a shot at someone) But the flares were a good idea although if you had burned one of them bad enough the cops could have looked in the local emergency rooms for them, kinda like marking your territory.

I don't know about you guys, but my husband brings his fishing gear when we go out on the water ( which always has the fillet knife in it), and the wooden ore is always on the floor next to the captains seat. Either would make for good weapons. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you, and you seemed to of reacted very well in that situation.
Lake Mead is pretty much the same, no cel service, so your pretty much on your own out on the water.
Hopefully that dosn't ever happen to you again.

Hello Miranda! I recognise you from all your husbands restore threads (I guess it's both of your restore). Good to see that you have your own presence here on iboats!

Welcome
