Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

I caught it last week from a coworker who spread it to several of us in the office. Was full 3 days in bed and now a week on just dealing with the final stuffy nose symptom. Seems the flu shot I got a month ago didn't help me this year. My wife then got it from me but hers wasn't quite as bad. The kids seem to not be catching it from us.
Anyone else get unlucky?

Don't know what I had, but it lingered for about 3 weeks. Had 3 days in the middle that was real bad ... Almost went to the doc, it was that bad. My wife says I need to be dead to go to the doc ...

Happy to hear you're on the back side of the flu now because the news mentioned yesterday that two people have passed away so far here in the Riverside California area due to this spreading flu that has yet to peak in this area.

Stay healthy out there.:)

Thanks...I actually haven't been that sick in years. We actually started getting the flu shot in 09 when the H1N1 got really bad. One of my sons classmates died from it that year when the government was rationing the shot here in MN. They refused to give that boy a shot and go figure, they mismanaged the rationing and threw tons of the shots away in the end. To top off my situation this year, the shot I ended up getting was supposed to cover additional strains of the flu and the only reason I was able to get it was because nobody's insurance would cover it and so they had only that type of vaccine left.

I get a flu shot every year. I don't get the actual flu very often.

How do you know you got H1N1? How do you tell which version of flu it is?

Well, everyone in the office got tested at the Dr. and confirmed the H1N1 strain. There is a quick test utilized to confirm it. They just assumed I had it given the situation and symptoms and I was the last one to catch it so had their hindsight. One less thing I'd have had to pay out of pocket.

I only get the flue when I get the shot. Won't ever get the injection again.

Re: Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

My mother got the “Spanish Flu” as a toddler during the pandemic that killed an estimated 5 to 10 million people back in 1918-20. She never got it again and lived to be almost 96 when she passed. I have only ever had it once and that was in the ‘50s when I was in college and it was spread throughout the campus. My case was very mild compared to most of the people in my dorm.

I do get the flu shot now almost every year. Discussed this one time with a doctor and boating buddy and he said we both may have built up some type of anti-bodies. However I remember as a child my father coming down with the flu every few years it seems.

not to nit-pick but approx. 50 to maybe as high as 100 million may have died in the great flu pandemic.proably just a coincidence but the only time ive ever gotten sick in the last 15 years was when i got the flu shot about 12 years ago.no flu shot and haven't felt ill for more than a few hours at any time.everybody around me can drop like flies and I just blissfully wander though the turmoil.

Never had a flu shot and prolly never will unless my work requires it . I work in a lot of hospitals . I will get a bug every now and then but not to often. I really believe in letting your own defense system fight it with some help with over the counter drugs .

Yep, my brain got ahead of my typing fingers. Missed a couple of zeros. A fairly large percentage of the worlds population back then.

Re: Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

One of my kid's friends' dad got this same strain of flu late last month. He's late 30's and healthy and almost didn't make it out of the hospital or so that's what the kid told my son. We verified he was in the hospital over a week at least.
I guess it can always be worse. The only plus side if there is one to what I and my co workers had was no throwing up. Not sure why the H1N1 kills when I don't recall anyone dying from the flu that we got every year as a kid. Maybe it's just a function of the internet and instant info.

jkust, actually approx. 30,000 americans die from the flu every year and about 2 to 3 thousand Canadians.h1n1 is a name ,nothing more nothing less.yes there are always execptions but normally its the very young and older people that are most at risk plus those with weak immune systems for what ever reason.lets be thankfull the Spanish lady has not made a return since the 1918,s-20,s.

Re: Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

There are literally hundreds or thousands of strains of the flu. They are constantly changing/mutating.
Most have origins with ducks and swine, and the open air markets found in many parts of the world.

The powers that be, "guess" at which of the more serious strains, will be the most wide spread, in any given year.

Then the develop a vaccine to protect against those strains.

So, no vaccine will protect you from all the flu strains. So you can get the flu even if you got the shot.

But the vaccine should prevent you from getting the flu strains for which it was developed.

Sometimes a serious strain gets spread, for which the vaccine was not designed.

Its a crop shoot, but the shot cannot give you the flu.

I get the shot, have since '99.

Some years I will get a mild flu, lasting a day or two.

Been lucky, pounding my fist on my wooden desk now.

You get more mercury eating a tuna sandwich. Not getting a flu shot because of this is beyond stupid.

I always get a flu shot. Can't even remember the last time I got the flu.

It's impossible to get the flu from the vaccine since the vaccine contains only dead virus cells. If you get the flu after the shot, you would have gotten the flu without the shot.

Re: Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

My wife is an intensive care nurse. She's seen more that her share of H1N1 this year. Surprisingly, it sounds like the most serious patients are younger, 40-50, without any other health problems. These people were at home one day, the next day they were on a ventilator, and sometimes even dialysis. A few of these people died. They all had one thing in common though, nobody got a flu shot. Local hospitals are completely packed.

The people that think that the vaccine doesn't help need to crawl back under a rock, or better yet, stay at home and don't have any contact with anybody during flu season. So what if you get a couple days worth of sniffles after the flu shot? It's a lot better than potentially laying in an ICU on your death bed.

Re: Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

Both my wife and I got our flu shot back in November. We start doing that back about a decade ago to forgo the flu. It can be extremely serious and there are deaths in most ever state that has flu cases now. And like bruceb58 stated, it is absolutely impossible for anybody to get the flu from the flu shot! Folks could get sick as their system builds anti-bodies to the dead flu bugs, but that isn't the flu. I hope all are well this flu season.

Re: Anyone else have H1N1 flu?

The ONLY time I ever got the flu was when I got a flu shot. No thanks.

I elect to keep that crap out of my body. So far, so good.

Be observant in a rest room. Watch just how many people do their business and just walk out. It's disgusting!
