Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

1977 evinrude 55 (spell check wants me to replace it with evildoer) although compared to some of the motors my brothers have it is a late model motor.
starts first time and every time. it will happily idle all day or troll kids on a tube all day
Looked at a new motor at the boat show this spring and when they took the cover off I didn't see a motor just all kinds of wire and tubes and bits of plastic:eek:
I'm not planning on downgrading to a newer motor anytime soon.

Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

got a 2003 merc 15 4 stroke in active service (its nice but too heavy and god help you if theres a problem with it) my 1st toy is sleeping in storage waiting for me to have the time and money.... shes a 1954 johnson seahorse 10hp. paint is horrible and it needs carbs cleaned out to help it idol a bit better. Also skips in forward so i want to turn the clutch dog around (not sure how yet) but that little motor starts rate up and runs for all its worth. love that motor because it will probly still run when my 2003 is long gone

Dang Gary! I'd eat a steak off that thing! :D

Here's a couple of mine. I love my old motors and find them every bit as dependable as a new one, if not more dependable. I have to admit, though, I like the slip clutch on modern motors and don't care for the shear pin that much.

Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

Here's my best runner- a '57 Johnson 5-1/2. Next picture is a 1922 Johnson- first year of production. It runs, but it's awaiting proper restoration.

Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

does anyone have a good running outboard engine thats not made yesterday?
Please tell me your story!

Shucks, not made yesterday is all I have. At the moment I have nine. The newest is 1984 and the oldest is 1918. Still working on the 1918, but it will run again....someday.

Mine aren't pretty enough to display though.

Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

Well here is mine. Yep, an older Force....1990- 90hp, 19 years young now and fairly original to my knowledge. Despite their controversial reputation this very simple unsophisticated motor has never let me down or left me anywhere in what is now our 3rd season with it. I can't complain...its already paid for itself now.
Runs the boat in the high 30's and tickles 40mph from time to time.
So far so good, knock on wood;)

Yea, I mistake my good running 1965 Merc 500 for a Johnson everyday.

My 67 Merc 500 is fantastic, I was thinking of painting white and getting some Johnson decals for it.

Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

I've had a couple good ones - all required work, but my '86 90hp inline six ran like i top when I sold it. Had a 61 5.5 Fisherman that started on half a pull and ran wide open all weekend on 2.5 gallons of gas. Grandpa's '79 Mercury 50hp 4cyl hasn't had anything done except gear lube changes, plugs, and a switchbox and still runs like new.

My current '98 25hp Johnson is the best outboard I've ever owned. 120/120 compression, starts on one crank, and sips fuel. I'm a happy guy.

Re: anyone have a good running outboard?

I've got several Johnnyrudes that run very well for old motors. I think I'll choose to brag about my '76 85hp. When I picked it up five years ago it was in pretty sad shape. It looked like it had been left out in a field and forgotton about for a couple of decades. After going through the ignition, rebuilding the carbs and fuel pump, repairing the l/u and giving it a good paint job, it's now on its second life. It runs great, up near 40 at WOT and will troll down to 2.8mph. It's a keeper.
