Re: Anyone have a grill on a 15 - 20 foot boats ?
Starcraft 1710- i've got no rails, nor is there really anywhere to mount rod holders. So.. I bought a stainless grill at Lowes ( $59. end of season) built a wooden tray for it to sit on on top of the engine cover. The legs fold and are U shaped, so I put blocks on the tray for them to sit over - drilled them so pins can be slipped through the legs and blocks and then put a couple web strips with snaps on them which go to a couple exiting snaps on the engine cover. Folded up the BBQ is like a suitcase and fits under the dash on pasenger side, the wooden tray goes in the ski locker. Cost - less than $75. It's in the center of the boat so nice and stable, don't have to lean out over the side of the boat, if I drop something it's not in the water, the tray catches any spills, which isn't a problem cause the bbq has a removeable catch tray under it as well. When I bbq I have lots of room and there's usually a couple people sitting up in the bow. Fire - I'm not worried about - if the BBQ ignites boat gas - I've got other problems, plus the fire ext is right beside the motor and in an emergency I can always throw the whole works over the side. By the time we finish our burgs, the bbq has cooled down and I can put it away, or I could (never have) run with it on the engine cover. On a windy day, i probably wouldn't be bbq ing or would be looking for a sheltered spot - if it was windy enough to be problem it probably wouldn't be too nice sitting out there anyway. Just my opinion, but i'd save the extra money for the kettle one, etc - they are great but really are designed for yauhts and sailboats where they will get lots of extended use, the last time we went to use my buddies on an overniter we dropped part of it - which was over the side and had no bbq for our 3 day trip. Save the money and buy a VHF radio or GPS or some other toy as well.
