Re: Anyone know of a good forum for camping?

I have the Kodiak... Springbar offshoot..

Canvas is what I use for Main tents... that other stuff ..dunno.. REI is the way to go EZ if you want ripstops..etc.

Again..are you packin or car tenting..

if your packing then lighter the better ( will cost more if you want quality ).

My Kodiak canvas is expensive and heavy..but no worries ;) those others will blow away in the wind.

Re: Anyone know of a good forum for camping?

Are there any forums for camping on par with iboats? I did a little Googling and most that I found seemed kinda dead. Is there a good one I'm missing? We're tent campers but I'd settle for an RV forum if it was pretty busy.

My search reconfirmed that iboats really is an uncommonly good and busy forum!

Let me know if you find one, Jeremy

Re: Anyone know of a good forum for camping?

It has been a few years since we tented, but the few things I remember is plastic under the tent for a little extra dryness, get a big fly or tarp for the rainy seasons (also good for the sun), thick air mattresses.

I second these suggestions. I used to do a lot of tent camping in Michigan's U.P. with friends, and learned some good tricks. One thing we figured out was, take a couple big tarps (like 16' x 18') and 4 metal telescoping poles I picked up at an army supply store. With some rope and tent stakes, we very cheaply rigged up a big overhang that covered up the tent (for extra protection) the picnic table (if we were staying at a rustic campground) and even the firepit- the poles went up to 7-8' high, so even big fires didn't so much as warm the tarp up. We were high and dry and sitting around a big roaring fire during some torrential thunderstorms that had other campers packing up and heading for motels

I'll be glad to help out if you do have questions.

I bought a screen tent from wal-mart for like $40 on sale that has served well as a supply depot, picnic area out of the sun, break from the bugs, cool place to lay for the dog. :) Somewhere I have a vid of the compound we setup at Devils Track Lake in Grand Marais, MN. I grab 2 cans of that fogger bug repellant just in case needed, and if so I canvas the site's hot-spots and close to my tent. I also try to keep the coolers close if not in the supply tent and away from the sun and make sure you ziploc everything well.

This is just common knowledge input but I figured I'd give a run at contributing to your tent camping forum.

A nice queen mattress with lots of air is always good.

We love the comfort of the air matress but have yet to find one that doesn't lose air during the night. I'm about at my wits end with those damn things also. Our current Eddie Baur one isn't TOO bad, at least we don't hit the floor during the night but it's still pretty lame that it leaks. I think it's the whole built in pump idea that just doesn't work too well.

I bought one from Sears...so its probably a Hillary...that came with the nice little folding / collapsible support that goes under it, an electric pump, and a carrying case on wheels with a pull-out handle...sort of resembles a carry-on style bag. Its all-in-all about the size of a golf bag, and twice as heavy, but after 8 years of use both in the tent and as extra bedding in the house for guests, it has yet to ever lose air. It is full size, and has a flocked top. I think it was just under $100.

Re: Anyone know of a good forum for camping?

my last good tent came from walmart actually cost me 50 bucks and i used it for years.
another vote for www.rv.net here as now days we have the rolling condo instead of the tenting. i don't think I'd ever get the better half back into a tent. our last experience wasn't great. bought a new tent with rooms and it got flooded for a week straight. tried to go back to the good tent from wally world but she wanted ntohing to do with tents anymore.

We had one of these, but the kids always complained about having to help set up the tent, and it wasn't something you would hike in with. If it weren't at a campground or you couldn't get there by truck then it didn't go. but you had lots of cover when it rained.

Loved those old tents, when it got hot you roled up the walls, when it got cold you fired up the little wood/gas drip stove (still have a tent wood burner out in the shop).
You can't beat canvass for long duration outings.

Here is a new and upcoming camping forum. A site that we used to be a part of got shut down and this was started by a couple of guys from there. Dog & Trailer

I have tent camped my entire life and just upgraded to a trailer, The REI Dome is an awesome tent! Costco has good deals on massive tents to. We purchased this tent from them a few years ago. It has a screen porch and 3 rooms for $120, the one on the left.

Hey EZ.. Intex is the best way to go (IMHO) for an air bed..

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Inte...&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products&Ntt=intex

Yes this bed is Heavy and bulky..not a backpack tent !! but soo sweet :) ..

Like I said in my past post I use a Kodiak tent..

http://www.kodiakcanvas.com/6014/

Yes its Very expensive..Heavy and bulky.. again Very Sweety sweetness :) .

When I was looking for a good tent ( lots of research ) I saw Northface etc ripstop nylon. .. but I found that Canvas is the way to go for long term and 3-4 season..

I dont know what kinda of seasons your looking at. But if your talking 3-4 season tent then canvas is the Only choice.

OH yea..on the tent ..

You ( I have never ) dont Need to put a footprint down ( tie down a tarp under your shelter ). Look at the floor thickness on the specs. Freaking Beefy !

I remember 2 years ago when the Group for our yearly "run down the river" all was Rain. .. Everyone with a tent was wet ( bags..gear..beds etc. they were taking bedding and packs out of there tents while I was drinking a beer LOL ).
