It is a 1992 9.9hp Johnson motor. The oil is also coming out of the vents where the water comes out just above the lower unit. Thanks.

That is normal. unburned fuel/oil mix plus carbon if it has been sitting a while. Try a decarb if it bothers you, and/or synthetic or semi-synthetic oil will help. Rick

Yep, the only part of a 2 stroke engine that keeps oil in it is the lower unit. That high up, it is unburnt fuel/oil from the exhaust side of the pistons. I would change oil brands and see what is running the best and reduces the amount of unburnt fuel....

Wow! That is a lot of unburned fuel. How is the motor running otherwise? Does this happen after a long period of idling around or after you are running full out? Looks like you are running very rich for a 1992 motor.

Did you add something to the fuel? That looks like carbon melting. I think certain brands of gas can also melt the carbon slowly.

Two cycle engines do spew oil, they have crankcase drains and oil should drain to the lower housing, the exhaust housing is also drained through a small hole in the casing, I have never seen oil drain from the exhaust outlet so extensively and would consider it abnormal, look for the exhaust housing and or crankcase drain to be plugged up, unless that engine is running on only one cylinder and just blowing raw fuel out the other?

I have used Seafoam in it.

This motor doesn't have enough power to get a 14' aluminum boat on plane. I have posted this problem several times before and tried all suggestions and none have worked. The only question in my mind might be that even though it has a 1/2" spark jump, it might not work under a load.

Radio Shack can't get one of the parts needed to make a high voltage tester. Maybe I will try a TV repair place.

I may take it to a mechanic for an estimate. I've been ripped off so many times I hate to go that route.

I had a 4.5 that would just puke that crud out continually when it was running but my crud was milkier looking.
It idled great but wouldn't push a boat. I sold it to a guy for cheap just to get rid of it.
I think I read somewhere that a blown gasket allowing water to get into the cylinder was the cause. I can't remember which gasket.
One trick a person posted said was to remove the spark plug after you ran it and tap the electrode part in your hand and if there were beads of liquid in your hand that meant it was water. If it doesn't bead up its just normal mix.

If you can't get it going part the thing out on ebay. You should be able to make a few hundred off it.

One up under the cav plate just above the prop, and one near the upper fill plug of the lower, I don't know the exact locations on your peticular motor, you didn't say the engine wasn't running at first so now my thoughts have changed, you obviously a dead cylinder and the unburnt fuel is being exhausted. compression test the cylinders.

It has a new carb kit, redesigned carb cover, fuel pump kit, spark plugs, fuel lines.
The carb has been cleaned about 10X. The high speed jet was clean when I took it apart the last time.
There is a 1/2" spark jump
I adjusted the idle cam screw to be on the mark when the throttle started to open and the left cam screw at full throttle withe the roll pin straight up and down. It helped some because at full throttle the motor lost power then came back up some when reduced before. Squeezing the fuel bulb doesn't help get any power.
I put soap suds on the gaskets looking for blow by and they looked ok.
Compression was 122# and 120#.
The float looked level.


The original owner bought it knew and used it about 4x as a kicker motor. So it sat in the Florida sun for years before I got it. It ran fine for awhile. Maybe a seal did let loose although I haven's seen any leaks around the block.

I can check for water, but I will have to use ears for water.

I just rebuilt the powerhead on mine, I'm running 25:1 to break it in and when I run it it looks like your pic. Change up the fuel/oil and try it, it looks like it may have been mixed with too much oil.

I ordered a new fuel pump and a few days later I talked to a marine motor repair student. He said it was because the fuel pump was pumping too much fuel to the bottom cylinder and was going out the exhaust.

With the pump on it quit oozing.

BA I can tell you that I think that motor should plane off a 14ft. tin boat with no problem, I have a old 9.5 that planes off my 14 ft jon boat fully loaded. Either you have a power issue or you need to redistribute weight in your boat.

If you have not resolved the direct voltage adapter (DVA) issue, you might want to consider the one from Electronics Specialties, Inc.
