I have spent a few vacations on boats, and though I had a great time it would grow old fast. I love houses, full size kitchens, and bathrooms you can stand up in. I will be retiring in my waterfront cottage with dock and boatlift.

Ok, since I was a dumbazz and posted on the other 4 year old thread! Blahhh. Anyway, This is my M&D retirement home. Custom built to my dads design about 5 years ago. They moved up from a 43 foot nautiline houseboat they use to live on. Needless to say, this one is more accomadating. They absolutely love living aboard. They have everything they need to be self sustaining. Has hardwood through out, Full size hickory kitchen (installed by me). Full size bath. Central air! John deer deisel motor, bow thruster, even has a workshop that many others in the marina have pulled up to on occasion to fix things on there boats. I am so happy for them, they will live out the rest of there hopefully many years in comfort and don't have to go anywhere but down the river for a vacation. Also makes a great docking and home base for my little boat. There houseboat weights in at around 80 tons. Hurricane siding. 2 generators, etc. The last picture shows where the second floor was lowered into the first floor so they could tow it to the river. They raised it back up after she was launched. My dad and I finished the rest of the interior build-out. I also have a brother who has an older 60 ft houseboat that we put a second floor/pilot house on. He also is a live aboard.

OK, for a boat like the one posted in Chriscraft's post, I might change my mind! Don't know where I would park it though.

Hey Kevin, just noticed you are just north of louisville. He is out of Prospect Kentucky. You may have seen it on one of the many trips they have made. They took it to Pittsburg a couple years ago. There headed that way this coming monday for a month long trip. They are also always up around Madison and 18 mile island etc. They have also traveled down to cumberland river area. This boat definately gets used, it vary rarely sits still for long. Pretty much any where they go, people ask about the boat and are taking pictures. It was designed by my dad and the hull/structure built by John Darling and friends. It was the last boat he built before retiring do to health I believe. I think his brother is still building customs. I know the people that bought there old nautaline were from up your way. Its pictured next to the new boat above at the marina.

Re: Anyone live aboard full-time? Would you?

Seems like a very interesting topic.

its a great topic. !
sasto may have done us a favor with the other one.

as i said in the other thread.....i lived aboard a 43 foot costal crusier......it had everything including a washer and dryer.

hands down......the best life style i have ever known.

when on land (at work) you actually want to get home to feel the rocking of the waves. you see the otters, birds and fish every day....
morning coffee on the aft deck......evening sunsets on the top deck....this is to say nothing about throwing a crab trap off the side in the morning and having fresh crab for supper ........priceless.....

just a short story of you......
we used to be on a dock in tovey bay in Victoria BC.... very secluded......never a boat in sight.....you had to walk down a 50 foot bank to get to the dock.
my girl and i got used to being by ourselves....it was nothing to leave the curtains open in the main salon and walk thru to the galley or to the shower in the forcastle au natural.

we lost the moorage due to the owner of the dock getting back with there 85 foot blow boat from an around the world trip...they needed the whole dock.
we ended up getting moorage in Victorias inner harbour....in the industrial section.....very busy place....lots of commercial vessels...other boats on the dock. we got the last spot on the dock......so we were closest to the open channel.

well .....the morning after we moved......i woke up.....730....walked upstairs into the salon on the way to make coffee......yawned.......gave my self a scratch......looked out the window of the salon........and 6 feet away was the inner harbour water taxi full of passengers driving by!.........what could i do ? i was buck naked and they were right there ! broad daylight.

i just waved !

we started to close the curtains at bed time.

The boat hull and structure took about two years. The rest of it took another year.

If you put in near 12 mile island, you are almost directly across from the Marina. It is on the backside/louisville side of 12 mile island. You have probably seen her beached or cruising around that area. They go out during the week more than on weekends because of the boat traffic. Maybe I will see you on the water sometime. Budd

You had me at workshop...
Yeah, alot of people say that. It was basically out of nessecity will building the boat. He has to share the workshop with a washer and dryer though, lol

I will post pics of some of the interior when I find them on my computer.

In all of my daydreaming I've seriously thought about it..but in reality.. no room for all of my junk. One thing that has come to my mind is where my legal address would be, how do I get mail? Then there's the problem of wanting a jet ski, fishing boat, ski boat, and a pontoon. Big thing I'd really like to do is narrow down my wants and number of toys.

Re: Anyone live aboard full-time? Would you?

You get two docks at a marina that are next to each other so you can keep multiple toys. My dads has a lift so he can keep a 13 ft whaler on the top of the houseboat. Then he has another small boat that is on a jet dock next to the house boat. And I park mine there on weekends when they aren't boating. Your mailing address is just like a regular home, the postal service delivers to the marinas. As far as your junk goes, if its junk, get rid of it,lol
