Again, thanks to all for taking the time to comment or inform. I will report back to this thread in the spring when I test out my new prop. With any luck I will get a warm day in April. My goal is over 50 mph and reasonable acceleration.

Re: Anyone tried a Turning Point Hustler prop. (RESULTS)

So I finally got my boat out today and has a chance to test that 21 pitch Turning Point aluminum propeller I bought. My hope was to improve the top end a few miles per hour to 50. I was running a standard aluminum 19 pitch and getting 4800 rpms and 47-48 mph top end. Well I am very disappointed. My best top speed on gps was 46.6 and the rpms maxed at 4400. The hole shot is a bit slower but still pretty good. The prop sounds louder due to the venting I guess. This prop ventilates ( or is it cavitating?) and slips a lot on turns and on takeoff. Overall I hate everything about it. Had I gotten the extra top end speed I still would not be happy due to the other charactaristics. So it looks like the stock 19 was a better fit. I would guess my best bet for maximum speed would be a 19 stainless. As for Turning Point props....don't waste your money. Mine is now my emergency spare.

Looking at your numbers you should have went with the 19 pitch Hustler prop. It all make sense to me, slower out of the hole (overpropped) and not enough rpm (overpropped). Trade it in for the 19 and retest.

You know.....if the Turning Point prop did not slip and ventilate like it does, I would try a TP 19 pitch. The TP prop is just slightly smaller diameter than the original prop too....14 inches versus 14 1/2 think. I put my old prop back on and will test it today on the gps for a new season comparison.

Thats a bummer. This really highlights the differences in different hulls with the same power where props are concerned. Like I said this past winter up above, the only thing the TP had in its favor was there was simply no way, no how to make it ventilate, even trimmed way up. The truth is we really need a couple of extra cylinders.

Re: Anyone tried a Turning Point Hustler prop.

I have an 1987 18' Bowrider with 4.3 two barrel cobra and I put a 19p Hustler on and it is great.

I had 8 people on the boat yesterday with a full tank and I could not make it slip even on on a very choppy very busy lake. Hole shot was great.

Trimmed up a bit the boat would scream around 4800 rpm. Not sure of the top speed as I left my gps in the truck by my old age forgetfulness. But I am not worried about top speed.

On the down side one long weekend in a 1st of spring lake with lots-o-debris and my brand new prop is quite dinged up!

Luckily the Hustler comes with an interchangeable hub so now all I need to do is buy just an additional prop.

Re: Anyone tried a Turning Point Hustler prop.

So I did retest my original 19 Quicksilver aluminum prop this past weekend. Gps speed was 46.7, almost the same as the Turning Point 21. RPM's maxed at 4800, right as they should . The dig, hole shot and acceleration are all better than the 21. I guess I will not see the elusive 50 mph I was hoping for. Maybe if I go out alone and with little rule and a tailwind! Or maybe....I should just go for the stiletto 19.

Quality and performance comes at a price. I wouldn't expect much out of a hundred some dollar stainless steel prop as you found out...no perfromance and harsh and not smooth running.
Personally I wouldn't buy anything other than a Merc prop, they just run smoother and perform better it seems. Once everything is said and done they are not that much more money.
Plug in your numbers on Merc's prop selector web site and they reccomend a Laser II 14x19 or an Enertia 13.8x20 if you want the 3 blade SS.

If you're thinkining stainless, Most good prop shops will let you demo (as long as you don't damage the ones you are demoing) until you find the right one-only catch is that your're going to pay for at least one s.s. prop at about 400.00. Or..why dont you try the 19p tp -you already have the hub, how much more is the 19p prop? One last thing to consider, if you jack up your stainless prop, the toll for fixing it is about 125.00- not to mention the potential for greater damage to your outdrive.
My two cents-Mac

Am I the only one that thinks you might be down a bit on power? Your results don't sound normal to me. Any prop experts agree?

I'd almost agree here. Your results are about the same as mine I described above but you have a lot less weight to contend with. Those 700lbs fewer lbs of dry weight and your smaller quantity of gas should have you spinning the TP with ease I'd think. 700lbs is like me adding 3 two hundred pound guys and a good sized kid along with my standard family of 4. That difference would my sig boat not even planing out.

Post your gearing it is stamped on the leg of your outdrive...Its time to see how much slip is going on between these different pitched props

Re: Anyone tried a Turning Point Hustler prop.

i am running a 17foot bowrider with a 115 merc and the tp prop runs the boat faster than the higher pitched merc lightspeed s/s prop. if i could get one with more than a 23p i would buy it in an instant.

Re: Anyone tried a Turning Point Hustler prop.

Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum. I just wanted to post my results with my TP Hustler 14 X 21 prop. I purchased my boat new in 2007, it is a Tahoe Q4 with a 4.3L (carb) 190 hp merc. It came with a 23 pitch alum. This prop had great top end, 58 mph at 4900rpms but it had to work for tow duties (pulling an adult with 1 ski). This year I purchase a TP Hustler 14 X 21 and my results are very good. My boat now pulls much easier and is more responsive through out the rpm range. Top end has dropped to 56 mph @ 4500 rpms. Lastly the boat stays on plane at slower speeds which makes it nice for cruising. For my application this prop at $120 has been a good investment.

Sounds like if you want to use a TP Hustler Prop you should pitch 1" or 2" down from where your current prop (if running at correct WOT RPM's) is = more aggressive props than the specs would indicate.

Go for the 19 Stiletto, it will be faster than the 21 hustler, I have a 21 Stiletto and it out performes the 23 laserII, and the two PowerTech props I tried. 23 PowerTech ran a lot like the LaserII seemed slippy and would not load my engine enough, tried a 24 Power tech and it was actually 5 mph slower than the 21 Stiletto, and revved higher.

I have one that I bought for a 90 HP Merc OB. It is all that it is said to be and for an aluminum prop I doubt you will beat it....It seems that their designers did their homework and you get the proceeds.

Only problem that I can mention is that Aluminum is softer than SS and thus the blades are thicker which can cost you a couple of mph..................buttttttt all things need to be taken in proper context....and yes, I bought mine from iboats!!!!

Good Luck,

Mark

Re: Anyone tried a Turning Point Hustler prop. (RESULTS)

I am really enjoying all of the thoughts and suggestions on propping my boat, and the Turning Point opinions. One last thing I neglected to mention that may have affected my test is the Smart Tabs my boat has on them. The day I test the 21 TP prop my tabs were set on hole 2. The next day when I tested the old Mercury 19 I dropped the tabs back one click to hole. I may give the TP one more shot with the tabs at hole 3. Also, I just checked my outdrive gear ratio and it is 1.62. So my slip numbers are identical at 14% on both props. Not sure if that is typical, but the props are aluminum. The 21 ran 46.6 at 4400 rpms while the 19 ran 46.7 at 4800 rpms. What type of slips are others seeing from their 4.3's?
