anyone want a kid?

Well, I went out of town for a couple of weeks. I just went out for a little spin in the boat. Boat was on the lift crooked .. anchor tied to the thottle and then to the dock. Oh well, I lower the boat, push off, and nothing. I noted that the key had been left on. With no paddle, I'm watching the dock slowly disappear. I paddled in with a life jacket. My kids know they can take it out anytime they want, but man, are they grounded forever.

So, the battery is completely dead, and I'm charging it now. It's a 1965 40 hp electric shift. I also noted the throttle was in reverse. I would imagine I drained the battery through the reverse coil and the points to an ignition coil. Anyone have any ideas on if this thing will start (melted/burned points) and still have a reverse gear?

Thanks

the points are not 12v on that model, the reverse coils were if the selector was in reverse with the key on. and the voltage regulator may have taken a hit, all you can do is fire it up and see. that motor can be rope started as well. ign system is not battery dependant but the shifting is.

AH .. I forgot about the dang rope! The battery was dead when I first got it, and the generator was not working (I later "polarized" it and it has worked great ever since). I replaced a coil, and pulled the rope .. started first pull! So, I thought we had the battery going to the coil, through the coil primary, through the points to ground .. so if the key is left on, and the points happen to be closed (likely), we burned up the points. No? That's at least one piece of good news. The regulator seems to be three relays .. guess we could have burned up one of those? I'm told the gearcase coils are tough to find. I'll fire it up in the AM. Hope it works.

Thanks.

no worries on the points. they are not connected to anything 12volts. the reverse coil may or may not have survived. we will know in the AM :)
its all about the anticipation :)
