AQ125 Can I test run motor w/o outdrive?

Hi gentlemen, My boat is an '85 Bayliner Capri project with the Volvo Penta AQ125 and 270 outdrive. I have the outdrive off and would like to try and start up the the motor to see if it runs.

Here's how I was planning to do it, but I don't know if it's okay? Connect the garden hose directly into the raw water hose heading into the transom. That's it. I understand water will be flushing out of the exhaust bellows (when running) assuming the cooling system is operating properly. Do I need to do anything else to test run?

Will this be totally loud since the exhaust bellows will just be hanging out? What if I were able to feed the exhaust bellows directly into a bucket full of water? Would that make it quieter or be necessary for any other reason?

Thank you!

Instead of hooking a hose directly to the raw water supply hose, extend the hose from the transom, and put it in a bucket of water. Using the hose has a tendency to blow the seals out of the metal lines hooked to the pump and cooling system. Using a bucket allows the raw water pump to do it's job.
As far as the noise, don't worry about it. It's not that loud.

Thanks a million Don! Going to tackle that today.

Don, I did exactly what you recommended and it worked like a champ! For my transom hose i bought some clear pvc hose from the home depot to make sure the impeller was doing its job.

This was the first time I have tried to run it, so I was pleased to get it running. For those interested, I made a cruddy quality video so you can see how I did it. Maybe another noob will find it useful.

You'll see some heavy water leaks from the pump housing and you'll here that there is a misfire in there too that will need to be addressed.

I had the same leak on the pump. I had a hard time finding the correct seals and everyone wants to sell you the whole pump kit. I ended up using typlical rubber O rings used for a garden hose, one on each side of the copper connection at the pump. It works great, perfect seal. It only cost 2$ and I even have some spares.
