I have been reading here a few years but finally joined to get help with this nagging problem. The boat I recently purchased is a 1984 aq125a with 270 outdrive which has been hacked in every electrical area imaginable and I have removed about 75lbs of black tape concealing the savage mechanics tricks, I find there is voltage coming from the alternator towards the switch side of the ignition coil when the motor is running so when the key is turned off the motor stays running - the wire feeding the coil is shared with a wire to the starter solenoid. My question is the value of the resistor or is this really a blocking diode to prevent the cranking motor from being activated once the motor is already running? I have not found this part in the bilge and am thinking I can locate the discrete part and wrap with noalox and heat shrink tubing to provide a suitable circuit.
I have almost solved all the other problems thanx to patiently reading here, soon I will dip the drive into a water tank before the maiden voyage after bringing this wiring mess back to factory specs.

Thanking you in advance

Re: aq125a does not turn off with key off

I have removed the wire from the ignition coil + and left the wire shared between the starter solenoid and alternator then found the motor will start up and the alternator output shows 14 on the dash guage, I was thinking after 90 plus views someone would know the purpose of the resistor named item and possibly the actual value, anyone? On the weekand I will remove the fuel tank to replace the rubber line leading to the fuel pump via the filter and tie up the wiring from the drive lift.
Before I had the motor running I was thinking this component in the wire is a diode that when energized from the alternator would prevent the starter solenoid from activating which would save the ring gear from abuse if someone turned the key to start while the motor was already running.

Don, it seems you have deep knowledge of the volvo family. I started this thread at the suggestion of Bondo as I first asked this question in a different thread, I have been looking around the docks and see some of this vintage have converted to a single wire Delco so this resistor is no longer shared to the alternator - what does this part do? Does this balance something with the guages? Today I tried starting with this wire removed from the starter solenoid and the voltage showed 14 again, should I ignore this resistor/wire and tape off the lead that went to the alternator? My motor is equipped with a Paris Rhone with screens but I am not able to see the actual part number, if this alternator were to fail I think I would go the way of the single wire Delco but it works now.
Thanking you in advance, Virden
