Arabs owning Ports in the U.S.

Re: Arabs owning Ports in the U.S.

I have a problem with ANY body having an interest, etc. in our sensitive areas.

I really had no issues with the Brit's having control over the Longshoremen. 1. The Brit's are true freinds and experts. 2. Let them deal with our unions.

As for a foreign government having control, eg, UAE, I have SERIOUS reservations.

At least with the Brit's, it was a private company. With the UAE, it's GOVERNMENT owned.

I DON'T TRUST THEM!

With that said, we all have to realize.

1. They would own loading/unloading op's. only.

2. They would NOT own the port.

But, still, this one smells. I disagree with the President on this one, as I do border (lack of) security.

lark
far from it, I trained with some ships in the aussie navy and shared a few beers here and there with them.
most americans realize ya'll actually have a city there:) :)
(another joke)
but ya gotta admit a lot of folks only get to see Australia through the eyes of crocadile dundee(Paul Hogan) and Steve Irwin ( the crocadile stalker).
but quite a bit of us actually watch shows that highlight various Austrailian cities and ports that are progressive and 21st century.
however we still like to poke a bit of fun .
once this place sells there is a rock over there I will see.

rodbolt, I am not saying that all Americans act this way, it was just 18R's comment that got to me.

Back to the port "thing". Here is my point, when it comes to security, familiarity, can lead to laziness and for people to not do their job as they should. Maybe my opinions are somewhat racist toward U.A.E after 911, but, I just trust almost any other company or country to be running an operation in our ports.
This was PRE- 911, but I used to do a-lot of work for the cruise ship industry. There was one port in the US, in particular, where one cruise line, pretty much "owned the port". There was more than one occaision, where due to scheduling, etc, that we took TRUCKLOADS of products and equipment directly off of ships that came into that port from over-seas and no-one (customs) even knew it was happening. We (most of the time) would drive the truck to the customs office (several miles away) and volentarily ask them to clear or check are cargo before we left town with it. Half of the time, the customs officer didn't even get up from his desk, because he was familiar with us and "trusted" us. Again, this was before 911......I hope things have changed !!

RF – It's just my personal experience. I couldn't even confirm it for myself if I wanted to. You can Google and find stuff on ‘Carnivore’, ‘Echelon’, and ‘DCS1000’. I remember reading about it in computer/networking articles right after 9/11 because there was a lot of controversy around the pressure the feds put on software companies and ISPs to support their “sniffing” efforts.
