You think you've got it bad. In the UK gas is over 90 pence a litre at road side garages. Marinas are even more. At a rough guess that makes it about $7.40 dollars a gallon. Try running a 225 at this price!

GO SAIL!! I have 2 boats, an old 21 chris, and an old 27 ODAY. one is power the other is sail.. when the wind blows I use the Oday, If the wind is not blowing I use the Chris sparingly... Both my boats are worth less than 10,000 combined.. there's a good bit of maintainance in owning 2 boats, but if you like doing it, then you can have a good time and come out OK....The sailboat gets more use lately... :D :D

I just got back from a week vacation at winnipisauki. The whole week i used one tank full of gas(37gal.) in my ranger with a 150efi.I would not have cared if i used 3 tanks...it was a vacation with the wife and 3 kids. We fished and explored the lake every day. Now that i am home i will probably only use another 1/3 of a tank before winterizing my boat.High fuel prices are here to stay...we will be seeing $3.00 agal. by next summer.

It has not effected me, but a couple of the guys working in my company have told me they are getting rid of their boats because the cost is more than they can afford. It weighs on me heavily as cost of operations will not permit a cost of living raise at this time.

The boat gas don't hurt too much, it's the trailering. So I'm doing more of my fishing closer to home.

I'm fortunate to not put too many miles on the minivan and truck, so the boat is not too big a deal. Lake we use most is 8 miles away and wife and I both work 15 city blocks from our house... Between the 2500 Chevy going 3 1/2 hours up north with the boat and 28 gallons burnt in the Johnson 70, I spent $250 in gas for our vacation this year.

Jeff

I typically burn between 25-30 gallons a day while fishing but that doesn't get under my skin as much as the 140 miles round trip at 10 mpg to put the boat in the water.

So....my solution is to buy a bigger boat so I don't feel as bad about spending the money to drag it too the water. I know this doesn't make sense but it's the only justiifcation I can come up with for getting a bigger boat this fall. :D

You guys should think yourself lucky. Try buying petrol (Gas) over here in Scotland. I cost about $1.75 a litre and I use about 60 litres a day. I've already spent about $1200!!

Not boating less, but boating smaller. Got rid of my 100+hp rigs. Have a 15hp aluminum tiller model, and am about to buy a center console 17 all welded aluminum.

Filling up at the gas dock is now $3.03/gal...so that makes it cost about $140 for me to fill up.

I tend to look at it like this:

If you are wealthy enough or lucky enough to own a boat (Especially on long island NY) dont ***** about the gas.

Re: Are gas prices having and effect on your boating activities?

Gas prices have not hampered my fishing any. I have been fishing more now because the river I fish has been less crowded. The boat launches are close to home both fresh and salt waters. Ususally when I hit the water I am fishing within a few minutes. My 112HP Evinrude will allow me several fishing trips on one fill up. I love fishing so much that I would cut back on my cell phone useage and put that money in fishing.

Gasoline prices are currently in the $2.80 to $3.00 range. Two weeks ago, I spent over $120 for fuel. I had to cut back this past weekend and only spent about $60.

Gas prices have put a definite strain on my recreational boating budget. I probably will continue to cut back on cruising and water sports.

I'm starting to regret that I sold my 12' tinny with a 9.9hp this past summer.

This is my first season so I don't have a historical reference. I do try to get to the lake as often as possible. Usually I run the motor for a couple hours every weekend and spend the rest of the time hanging out at the lake. So far I get 3 - 4 trips on a $50 tank of gas.

Re: Are gas prices having and effect on your boating activities?

Hasn't crimped me. But I don't use marina gas for the first tank out.. I fill the 6 gal "boat tank", my 1 gal "emergency tank" at the gas station whilst I'm gassing up the truck. That lasts around 3-4 hours for me. If we're going to be out longer, it's around $20 to fill at the marina .. cheap entertainment. Cheaper than the movies still (after refreshments, etc).

If I'm taking a friend (or friends) I ask that they pay either for the truck's gas out and back, or the boat's gas. They always opt for the boat gas (snicker) .. seeing as how it's only around 8 gallons to drive to/from the lake .. and 12+ gallons for the boat.

if a friend is in bad shape financially, I just ask for donations to the ice / bottled water .. or have them bring baloney sandwiches (not that I eat them right now .. on a diet).

If they're real bad off (as sometimes people get) I pay for it all and just enjoy having them out with us.

So .. no .. not really affected me much.

Rob, which lake do you go to? We fish and play at Smithville. I always make sure to fill up before we het to the lake, cause last weekend, fuel was almost $3.50 a gallon at the marina.

The gas prices have caused us to slow down on the playing around. We just troll or tie up at the bridge now.

Re: Are gas prices having and effect on your boating activities?

A couple of weeks ago I trailered about 50 miles to Lewisville Lake. I got skunked along with a bunch of other problems. I used up about 7 gallons on the lake, the van used a whole lot more than that. I didn't even blink an eye untill it settled in that I got "SKUNKED." So now I am just going to the Pool, its only about 3 miles away, and the fishing is good. So not going out less, just not going as far :)

Lake Tahoe is getting crazy, Sunnyside Marina is one of the cheapest on the Lake at $3.849, I get 10 Gal on a regular basis when water testing new boats...its $39 just to test a boat nowadays, we still give free demos though.

I stopped fishing the regular Wednesday, Sunday night tournaments. I used to go to the lake 4-5 times a week, now the most is two.
