Just thought id share this little experience with y'all. kind of a long story bare with me

My girlfriend had been using my car for a while, an 03 BMW 330i. I asked her to stop at the parts store on the way to work and make sure it was "full of oil". When i talked to her at lunch I asked how much it took. she said she "wasn't sure she bought the big jug and filled it up". me "well where was it on the stick before you added some" her "It wasn't that low. I could see it, but I made sure it was full I'm not stupid" I don't know what it was something in her voice maybe but I just started questioning things. so I asked "I really wish I knew how low it was, you should have some idea how much you put in" she replied in an angry voice "I filled it up, ok". At that point I was starting to think is she lying to me. so I asked "are you sure it was full cuz I'm going to check it when i get home". Now she is pissed "Im not an idiot I know how to check my oil and I can take care of my self If you want to double check it fine. But I filled it up I know it is full I couldn't put anymore in it!". My stomach dropped when I realized the terminology we had been using "full of oil", "filled it up", "couldn't put anymore in". I said "what do you mean you couldn't put anymore in that's not possible, It ran... you drove it...it didn't blow oil everywhere... what are you saying? HOW MUCH DID YOU PUT IN IT!". I never yell so she is really worried now "I..I just pored as much as I could in it. it was full" in a quiet meager voice. My head was really spinning "how is it even possible, could an engine really run like that" I asked my self. I asked her "did you put in in the radiator" "no! I put in in the little cap at the top where you told me". Now I'm thinking "oh my god what has she done". I told here "babe if its actually running like that just drive it straight home and be easy on it PLEAS". All day my head was spinning and my stomach was sick I've never even herd of someone doing that and would 5 qts fill it up. So when i get home first thing she shows me where she put it. Thank god it wasn't as bad as I though. She filled the power steering reservoir plum to the top :lol: flushing it was a pain but way better that filling the whole crank case. In the end she shed a few tears and I pulled a few hairs but nothing was damaged

I would have told her to sit there, I'd be there as quick as I could. Expecting I'd have to call a tow truck, afraid to let the overfilled motor run at all.

Then I'd have felt greatly relieved to later learn it was just the PS fluid.

I hope you showed her the cap labeled "710" and told her that is where the oil goes.


THe surprising part of this story, is that your bimmer is using oil ?

I learned to hate that thing and will never own another, the oil separator is a common leak and a MOTHER to get to. Nothing special about a bimmer other than is an expensive over engineered pain to work on.

You should sit back and think about what you did and maybe you'll realize you're much more to blame than she is... having a woman do auto mechanics on a Beamer???

... after you've thought about this you need to apologize to your girl friend profusely and take her out to a real nice restaurant for dinner to make up for your absolute lack of thought on the task you gave her and the stress you caused her.

If it was up to me you'd lose your man card for at least 5 years for doing what you did.

lol your right and I wont make the mistake again... but she was always talking about how she was raised in a garage working on cars with her dad and blah..blah wasn't afraid to get dirty could show up most men, the real mistake was letting her use the car before I really got to know here better.

I did apologize and she came clean about all the mechanical stuff she was just trying to make me like her

Parents, do parents teach their kids anything about this stuff anymore? Or do they just let the kids get fleeced by dealerships and repair shops who overcharge and take advantage of people without the least bit of mechanical knowledge?

sounds like a keeper.

Some ladys get upset if you try to help. Ive watch a lady putting oil in her car and shes cursing up a storm so I offer to help. I get the not to nice speech about men think they know every thing and if it wasn't for the stupid design that shes sure was a mans idea putting oil in the car would not be such a hassle. I walked off smiling while she carried on trying to pour a quart of oil in to the dip stick tube while cursing at the mess it was making.

Never owned an auto, but had 2 K-series bikes. They are nothing short of wonderful.

That would have been all on you.

Yep, without a doubt. I see evidence of it everyday. It is especially galling with the young men but there is really no excuse, even for the young ladies. My 29 y/o daughter now has to give basic automotive maintenance advice to her 30 y/o husband. Very pathetic.

I wouldn't let my, now 25 y/o son have his first car until he helped me do some body work and a head gasket replacement on it. If he didn't make himself available, no work got done. In the end, he helped and he learned. Now he is the first one to jump in when some minor repair is necessary.

i knew she couldn't have possibly filled the crank case and th head and valve cover. and then drove the car 20 miles to work. i honestly thought it was in th coolant. on top of that i was tired of that car and wasn't putting anymor e money in that pit

the whole woman putting oil in the car thing, seriously? i date farm raised country women that can pull a 30ft stock trailer and drive the tractor. EVERY woman... EVERY person that operates a motor vehicle should know how tocheck and add oil, and she pretended to know. i didn't make her take a test i took her word

my boys are 28 and 22 and went through the same teaching. no work on a vehicle, no vehicle. unfortunately I think you and I and others our age may be the last run of parents who think that way. now days parents buy the kid a new car with a warranty and tell them if anything breaks call the roadside assistance number.

My youngest is still driving an "86 Ford. Funny seen him pass on the highway yesterday, the truck is starting to look like a classic now, stands out that's for sure. It's not pretty by any means just distinctive. LOL

Just to make you feel better I offer you this...


Couple years ago my wife asks me to add some antifreeze to her Jeep since it is low...HUH? How can it possibly be low and how would she know anyway so I grilled her and pretty much got the same answer you did, so I go outside and everything is fine, yes her reservoir was a little low but nothing bad and her radiator level was fine so I asked her to tell me what color fluid should I use which is when she told me she liked the blue color better....

Give her a kiss and a pat on the backside and politely explain the difference.

I got another one but its a bit more intensive, wife decided to take my 2000 7.3L Powerstroke across the state to deliver a friend of my son home after spending a weekend with us, took my son the friend and her over the Rocky Mountains for a nice summer drive, I had no idea she had plans to take my PowerStroke.

Only problem is that my Powerstroke was not any ordinary Diesel, Bigger Turbo, Bigger injectors a bunch of BIG modifications to make a 7000Lb truck do a 13 second 1/4 mile, it was by all terms a race truck albeit a street legal one. I had explained to the wife repeatedly how important it was to watch the little Exhaust Temperature gauge and why and everytime I explain it her eyes roll up in her head...

So I get this call from my son asking about the little gauge and what number is the limit? which gets me thinking as to why would my 13 yr old son be asking me this so I question that when my son slips and says Mom is driving the truck(I had no idea) and so I ask my son what happened and my son mentions a race and a Porsche and Eisenhower pass and now I am pretty concerned and ask if the truck is still running and he says yes so now I am feeling better, so I ask my son what number was the highest number he saw the gauge read and he asks mom and I hear mom say she doesn't know shes not wearing her glasses nor was she paying attention since she was driving and in the middle of race for god sakes....

I locked the keys to the Powerstroke in the gun safe after that..

Point is don't get mad your car survived, if anyone learned anything its probably you, I have taught all of my children(3 Daughters and 1 Son) how to do routine maintenance on their vehicles from checking and changing the oil to changing a flat tire correctly and safely, my wife however will never touch anything mechanical, not because she doesn't want to but because in order for the rest of the family to survive we need to keep most tools out of the reach of Mom. I don't cook dinner because I am not qualified nor am I qualified to mow the lawn, my wife is not qualified to do some things as well, that's how we do it.

The lady leave the maintenance on her Sebring droptop to me. I leave the maintenance of the dirty clothes and dishes to her. Works out quite well. I take care of the mechanical/electrical issues; she takes care of the warm, snuggly issues - and does so VERY well.

For me, it's a good system...!

An 03 that needs the oil checked after being used for "a little while"? Unless this was 3 months, it shouldn't need any oil. I guess it's a BMW thing?

I saw your description of the issues with your BMW. Sorry for you. But it's actually sad.

The lady leave the maintenance on her Sebring droptop to me. I leave the maintenance of the dirty clothes and dishes to her. Works out quite well. I take care of the mechanical/electrical issues; she takes care of the warm, snuggly issues - and does so VERY well.

Good for you. I do all of that! Works great for my wife!
