Appaerently Im the only idiot to own a Sunrunner....Actually its a good boat, bout it about 6 or 7 weeks ago, gave it some TLC and it been treating me pretty fare. I posted in the Sunrunner forum, but have not recieved any answers so I will try here. 1985 I/O mercruiser 3.0 140 horse, merc O/D. The wife and I were at the lake yesterday trolling along at about 15 knots looking for a dock to land on. Pulled into a cove and flipped a 180, went to neutral and coasted for a second. put it in forward and nothing. put it in reverse and nothing. Luckilly drifted right to the dock like I meant to do that on purpose. Man I looked good. Let engine cool a bit and refired to see what the deal was. Coupler at flywheel is turning, shaft to O/D is not. (other than the resistance from the coupler) Im a heavy equipment mechanic so the tools and aptitude for the job is not an issue, just never tore one of these apart before. What am i in for as a repair, and what will I be seeing insde the bell housing? Dont have the O/D manual for this beasty, (have the engine manual). This happened with absolutely no warning and no indication by noise that a falure was comming. BTW, the boats name is Sock Monkey, because it's funny to me...

Funny you should mention Sock Monkey, my girl friends grand mother created them for the troops in WWII.

So I guess you need a coupler, to replace that, removed the drive, lift out the engine, remove the flywheel cover, unbolt the old coupler, replace, reinstall cover, engine and then the most Important Part.. Check the engien alignment. When you remove the engine and the 2 bolts/pins at the back, there should be a spring and fiber washer under the engine mounts, If you are missing the springs, that woud definately cause a bad engine alingment and kill the coupler.

good luck !!!

What he said. ^^^

You will need the manual, or at least do some reading online.

Assuming you have an Alpha - you will need the shifter in forward gear to remove the drive.

Most everything is common sense - undo the fuel line, etc. Easiest thing is to keep the front mount attached to the engine and pull out the lag bolts holding the mount to the stringers.

After pulling the engine you can evaluate the condition of the rear mounting hardware. Might want to replace them anyway as they aren't terribly expensive.

You would be correct sir, in assuming I have an Alpha. Sounds like a little more than I wanted to do, but oh well. Ill hit it with a hammer or something, that usually fixes stuff. Be a good time to do a thorough inspect, and replace the stuff that makes ya nervous. Thanks all, I'll keep ya posted

Love the name! After this maybe Evil Sock Monkey would be more appropriate now.

If you put in the wrench time you will get to know your boat VERY well. When you consider what need to be replaced also consider how hard it is to get in and out.

Good luck! Post progress updates!!!

Re: At least it floats...

The further advventures of Iamneo and his angry wife...(she was mad cause the boat broke, now mad cause its still broke, and its supposed to be around 100 deg this weekend) Ok finally got back to repairing the boat. Pulled the out drive, the shaft cleaned out the splines in the coupler. will probably just replace both. Dont trust the shaft splines at this point. Figured I would go ahead and do the transom bearing as well, I spotted a nice bright red blob of NLGI-2 laying in about the 5 o clock position next to the bearing when I pulled the outdrive. Indicates to me SOMEONE was there in the recent past, but neglected to do the job right. Would like to do the bellows and coolant tube as well. Have something that resembles high temp RTV (the orange stuff) partially clogging that. At least it didnt overheat and blow the engine causing me to run through the streets with a gun in each hand spraying lead all over hells half acre and hurting someone or giving them a nasty bruise. But i digress......gonna do some research on the stuff i mentioned then go to work on it. Thanks you all for your help, Ill keep in touch.

If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway)
