I got this motor with a boat I bought and have had it running once. It seems to have an intermittent spark. How would I fix such a thing? Thanks for any help.

Welcome,Do you have the model number? It is probably built by the Gale devision of OMC Production ceased after 63.Newer motors are close cousins with the Evinrude Johnson motors.coils for them are a weak point And most likely your coils are bad.You should also clean and adjust the points.

Thanks for the responce, Model # is 2A3. This is a direct drive unit and it ran strong when I got it going. Where are the coils and points located? Sorry I don't know much about outboards.

Your 2A3 was built in 1947-48 by Gale Products Division of OMC. You are in luck, the coils in those things hardly ever go bad. Take the points apart and clean all the gunk and grime off the parts, then polish each contact individually. Then set the gap to .020". Do them one seat at a time so you have a sample to look at when you reassemble them, as they are quite complex and have a bunch of little insulators.

It is all under the flywheel

Speaking generically
Remove the recoil starter if any.You may have to remove the side covers first.
There may be a recoil ratchet.held down by screws with the cover under it.
simply remove the screws and lift the plate. You should be able to inspect the coils and points through the inspection hole.If the coils are paper wrapped
they seldom fail if molded plastic and any discoloration or cracking replace them. You can file and clean/adjust the points through the hole.
You can usually remove the flywheel without a puller.Loosen the nut a couple of turns. While someone hods the motor up by the flywheel
protect the nut with a piece of hard wood or lead. Whack the wood sharply with a hammer.Flywheel should pop loose.

I don't know if this applies or not, but---
Some of those motors of that time period had a built-in flywheel puller. After removing the recoil starter, leave the starter pawls plate on the flywheel. Using a strap wrench to hold the flywheel, loosen the flywheel nut. It will then turn easy for a couple of turns, then stop. So, after it stops, just keep turning it (hard). When you have applied enough pressure, the flywheel will pop off. Great inventions of bygone years.

I used an in line spark tester and both cylinders have spark. I bought new plugs and new fuel and still will not start. As I said earlier this thing ran once for about an hour in a tank. It seems that the funky float is sticking. Could this all be a carb problem?

If ran for an hour, then stopped...sounds like some crud got pulled from the tank to the carb and caused a blockage. Pull, clean and re-install the carb.

Re: Atlas Royal 5hp

Hows this, The spark checks out with in line spark tester but plugs won't spark when out of engine when I turn the flywheel manually. They do have very funky homemade ends on the wire. My question is if the in line tester works why won't the plugs spark. ? Is the spark weak or do the ends make a big difference?

Re: Atlas Royal 5hp

You are grounding the end/electrode of the plug against the block when spark testing right? They won't spark if they are just dangling.

OK I sprayed fuel in cylinders and the thing fired. Took the carb back apart and the inlet in the bowl to the jet and the jet are clogged. My question is whats the best way to unclog these places? I Managed to get a wire partially in both ends but I don't think completely. This is really a simple design for a carburetor.
