To bring this back to some degree of sanity
, unfortunatly the welfare program goes beyond major handouts (many not needed or deserved). I teach in a community where the federal free and reduced lunch program is recieved by nearly a third of our students and most is sorely needed. Gone are the days where students can bring lunches. No place to keep, warm, etc... Besides, if parents won't make kids do homework, why would they make em lunch? It's not the kids fault, they are kind of stuck in the middle and need help. (scares me to have a "liberal" thought)

I personally think that government is like a fire. You need it for so many things but sooner or later, some idjut is going to think, "hey, if it works this well like this, why don't we make it bigger?". Before you know it, its consuming everything you have. I guess it goes hand in hand with the idea of Capitalism and the search for a bigger an better mousetrap.

Skinny, I definatly see your point on the sevententh amendment. However, after doing quite a bit of research, the 17th amendment was added because the state run "good ol boy" network had become so corrupt, little was being done for the good of the nation. I guess the pendalum has now swung in the other direction.

Plywoody made the following post:

This seems to me that perhaps it is engineered by both sides to keep us (taxpayers) focused on WHAT we are going to get, NOT whether or not we need it.

I was brought up with the Harry S. Truman idea that government assistance was to be a hand up, not a hand out, but you did't take the hand because you should be just too d#$m proud. Let some other poor sap take it if it's needed.

By the way, #5 is my personal favorite. There does not seem to be any question that some form of health care is necessary--and the question is what form it will take, as opposed to whether or not we will have it.
