Re: Avg 8

Easier than every other day downloading AVG updates.

AVG updates every day automatically. I don't know how it gets any easier.

AVG added a lot of new features that I don't particularly care for, but you can choose to not install all of them. They could have made it a little easier to do so. AVG was so popular because it

I started this thread just to give a heads up to AVG users about 8.0.

.

I have never had AVG update auto. The Icon would go black and gray, and a popup. And had it on 3 puters, for probably 5 years. Every once in awhile, it would inform me updates are ready, and I had to download/update them.
Thats the free version I had. And had zero in anything while setting up that I wanted to be asked first, like in M/S updates. Maybe its my Firewall, but doubt it, as its a trusted zone, Zone Alarm allowed. Maybe you can shed a little more here on this. You mean you have the free version, and never did a AVG update?

Re: Avg 8

I'll jump in here, if I may...
I used AVG 7.x (free version) for a long time , until lately and went to Avast as a trial balloon to see the differences. My AVG always auto updated when I booted up, no extra configuration on my part needed.
Here's a link to a guy that asks how to disable the default auto update....
http://help.lockergnome.com/security/AVG7-Start-ftopict1586.html

I realize that you want to have the auto update turned on, and that forum post points to the settings to check to enable or disable the Schedule settings.

Glad ya chimed in here. That said, ..(have not looked at the link yet, but will). I've decided to go AVAST. Just by looking at the blogs, simply seems better. No big deal really, either fine, just don't wish there were so many puter nerds out there, people with zero life, probably weigh 300 pounds, can't get laid, grunt getting out of the chair to get another "bag of chips", and see how they can screw up a good thing.
I got a BIG problem with "useless" code ID 10..TS..(idiots)..with zero life. but not much I can do. That said, downloaded Avast,, a little slow puter at start-up of "standby" at time's for a refresh, but aint going back to AVG. Avast is on the ball.
Too each his own, thats cool, but ya gotta have something. SOOO many don't, and pay for it in aggrevation...no big deal. I'll check yer link now, but sticking with Avast anyway...

Side note here on Avast it did a program upgrade today and no fooling around like searching with AVG to upgrade ...and super fast automatic ....it just is more impressive the way they operate......but it's tricky at first to hook up with their free one year licence...they have me sold LOL"s free

I haven't experienced the problems mentioned above (and I have used it on a lot of systems). I used Norton for years, but the software became so buggy and problematic over the years I was looking for an alternative. Their corporate edition I used at work was just as bad. Enter AVG. It was a small program that worked, didn't use a lot of resources and wasn't invasive. I also ended up dumping SAV Corporate Edition at work in favor of AVG Network Edition. I could push out client installs and centrally manage it just like SAV Corp. but it worked better and cost a lot less. People can say what they want about the Roxio thing, but at least they warn about a potential problem and proactively point to the solution rather than leaving your stuff broke and leaving the user clueless. They've added a lot of new stuff in AVG 8. Most of it, I don't want. They could have done a better job with their installer. Having said all that, I will continue to use AVG at work, but I might give AVAST a try at home and on my lappy to see what all the hoopla is about.

Re: Avg 8

I just started up the Laptop in my shop, running Avast now few days.
House puter is always "stand by", shop on "hibernate"...or "standby"
I never shut down completely, except for the needed once every 2 weeks or so MS updates, or just a full "fix it up", "clean it up scan".. which is a reboot...(pain, as Zone Alarm takes time to load again)
The first few minutes will slow ya down on Avast when ya link up internet, but not much more than a minute..(on high speed wireless, off the neighbor, who rents a house there of mine, and works daily.(me retired), and needs the speed, and cut her grass and do favors for the access, and
only slow USB 1 my end (or whatever..still have older puters, but in
shape)
That said, Avast is a daily update..(the first minute will slow ya down, so just go fed the dog), where as AVG would wait for days, then send ya an update notice, which means new stuff Avast finds every day, AVG would wait for a "load", then tell ya.
Try Avast. Ya got a 60 day trial without messing with the product key thats good for 14 months. Pretty simple, but ya gotta dump AVG first, as a "conflict"...

Re: Avg 8

Google AVG. keep clicking until you see the free version. There (as far as I know)..no "30 day trial", ya just in AVG , good until they blast ya with some new version, and the weekly downloading of updates.
You can do Avast (Google search) for 60 days no prob yer end..without going through the 14 month solid Product key (free..the 60 days brainless..no offense meant) but follow what said..pay attention to what said on the 14 month free Key...not hard, but I'm pretty up on Puters...
