Ayuh,....

Unfortunately,.... I installed it straight up.....

Now I need to find it's properties or controls to remove the toolbar....
No Luck so far finding it.....

If I remember... I right clicked the tool bar on the explorer and unchecked it. It then ran faster..... it still checks the results of a search but it is faster.

Re: Avg 8

Yea update to 8 well it wants me to update Roxio first ...so bye bye AVG ....I'LL just keep the avast.....works better anyways

IIRC the old 7.5 version did the same thing. I ran into it a few times on customer's computers. It was a minor hassle, but it was Roxio's update that needed to be installed (a tiny little patch). I thought it was nice that not only did AVG tell me that the update was needed to fix compatibility, but also provided a link. Usually new software just breaks stuff and leaves you to figure out why.

You might just uninstall and reinstall using the custom install.

Or you could try the steps outlined here. It's a good read, even if you don't use their procedure.

Re: Avg 8

I installed version 8 on a customers laptop and followed the destructions for a manual, command line install to omit the toolbar nonsense...

to wit:

* Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
* Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
o type
c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
* The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.

I did have a slight problem getting the installer exe to run following the above commands. Seems the "avg_free_stf_*.exe" file was not being found, despite copying the file to the root of the C drive.

To fix the problem, I renamed "avg_free_stf_*.exe" to Avg8.exe and changed the Run command to be:

c:\Avg8.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

The install went off normally.:)

Ayuh,.......

I started reading you link,+ Got Lost,... Had to come back to the I/O forum to talk Motors......:D

So,....
If I Uninstall Avg8 from the control panel,....
Can I just doubleclick the "exe" file I still have saved to my desktop,+ Run that wizard again,....
Only clicking on the "Custom" buttons to omit the Toolbar,....
I remember seeing the Choices, but wanted to see what it was.......
Shoulda listened to Bob........

Btw,......
If I start doing that Command Line stuff,.........

I'll need a New 'puter by tomorrow morning,..........:D

Don't know what OS you're running but an easy fix is just click on "view", then "toolbars", and uncheck AVG Security Toolbar.

I think so Bond-O. I've only installed it manually once. I do it different at work and that method doesn't really apply here.

If it doesn't work, Xcuseme pretty much summarized what that article was instructing. One of us could probably simplify further if necessary. Sorry this is such a PITA.

Yep, that should do it Bondo...(or just right click the bar and check it off..somehow a Google bar showed up on mine other day..ZAP..gone

That said, I had AVG for years. Today said need new, as seems every 2 days it wanted to update again. Removed, restart, did Avast, another restart, had to click the whatever for allowing to work with Zone Alarm..little figuring the product key whereabouts for the free year, done. Seems fine now, and probably say good bye to AVG. No more every 2 days updates..Avast does it real time, and don't slow me down any at all

They do their best to hide the fact that they still have a free version, but it's there.

For some reason over the years they do that once in a while. I remember once (4.x? I think ) You went to another site.

It is a pain to install product code, I had to email them; the explained it well.
Mine updates daily, but it just lets me know it had, for about 10 seconds.
I've had it in several computers for years-works great.

Also, download the free Mcafee site advisor. It warns of bad websites.

Yep, but the code is simple real..(the third time around on the last Laptop anyway.:D)
It could be made a little easier..its confusing as ya need to click somewhere where its the last thing you would think of..instead of some clickable box, its just something in blue writing..and right clicking the bottom Icon...little confusing..I wrote it down the second time.
And on start up, it will load, and tell ya, then go away. Easier than every other day downloading AVG updates.

Yep, but once explained in email(get the user code there) is simple
And works-I hit some bad sites on purpose- it works
Get that Mcafee site advisor; after seeing that in action, it will scare you-a lot of phishing happening.

Re: Avg 8

I have used AVG in the past , I prefer AVAST .
I did like AVG's free antispyware , unfortunately the cheap mutha's no longer offer the free version .
Oh well , there's stil plenty of good free antispy programs available from less greedy companies .

I hate browser add-ons , toolbars , etc..
They are a problem waiting to happen , even with Mozilla .
I still use a couple plug-ins for certain GIS applications , but I generally avoid them altogether if possible .
IME they are mostly unnecessary , and , can cause a lot of problems from hangs/crashes , to slow speeds .
If you need to open an application , just open the freakin' thing from the desktop or quick launch from the task bar , close the app when you are done .

If you want to search for whatever on the web , open another tab and go to Google or your search engine of choice .
This also helps avoid phishing sites and garbage sites that you get if you mis-type a URL in the address bar .

Most apps do not need to be attatched to your browser to work , they also don't need to start automatically every time you boot your OS .
Having them running constantly in the background just slows you down and wastes resources .

The only thing that should auto start with your OS is your security software , all others should only open when YOU tell them to , especially IM apps.

Phishing filters are all fine and dandy , but , they slow your browsing and are no substitute for carefull surfing .
