Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

Sorry its been so long. I've been working for the last 24 days, 10-14hr days w/o a day off on our annual maint. shut down at the silicone plant. BUT I have made some progress on the stringers. I am using a 6" glass mat to tab the stringers in and I was wondering how many coats to put on? The mat is 0.038" which is the same thickness as 40oz cloth. Is the glass for strength or mostly waterproof? Found the front motor mounts comprimised, pulled the motor (15min) stripped everything. Got a bunch of pic's, hope there not to big.

Can't figure for the life of me why the wood rots in these things

Boss,

It must be nap time for everyone ;) Looking good. I like how you got your stringers put together. Did you use PL or something similar to adhere/bed to the hull? As far as glassing goes, you might want to search the forum for the famous "Peanut Butter" mix. Put that in all of your corners to create a soft fillet. It will help the subsequent layers of glass lie down firmly and not lift up because of a sharp bend or crease.

For what glass to use it's sort of up to you. Looks like the original manufacturer used a woven roving, probably 16oz or bigger. You could go with the same thing but you have to use some CSM first and then the roving. Biaxial clothes are stronger than roving but they are a little more expensive. For my resto, I used 1.5 oz CSM and then covered with 1708 biaxial on the transom and 1208 biaxial on the stringers.

Carry on my friend. And remember...have fun.

Nice job so far. I can't help you with the number of layers of mat you need to tab in the stringers, but it is not just for waterproofing. The glass is what transfers any load between the hull and the stringers, so it needs to be strong.
How did you do the stringers? Are they interlocking?

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

I wish I took a good picture of how the original strigers were set. They were floating with minimal contact of the hull. When I cut them out I left about 1" of glass tabbing on both side to act as a channel, a form so to speak to give my strigers the original bends. The cross bracing are interlocking. Helped alot with keeping the structure rigid, square, and strong. The reason I ask about the tabbing in because some areas were 1/4" thick at the hull and some were barely one coat of glass mat. No method to the maddness as I see it. I don;t know what the oz of glass I'm using but it is about 1 mm thick.

You are really coming along now..looking really good! When I installed my stringers, I bedded them to the hull in a Poly "peanut butter mix" (Poly, sawdust, and talc powder) With just that alone, they were not going anywhere. I then tabbed them to the hull with first a 6" piece of CSM followed by another 8" or so piece over that. I then covered them with 2 more layers of the same, so they were encased.

Are you planning on, or have you already, drilled some limber holes? So that if water gets in the compartments outside of center (it will) it will have a way to drain to the bilge?

I was bored tonight, so I decided to create some artwork!! Not. Anyway you'll get the idea..you don't want water to get trapped outside of center and sit at the base of your stringers and start the process over again.

Keep it up!

I was thinking of something like that, but with foam going in the outer compartments I didn't know if it would block the drains.

Yes, most likely it will...I have read of a few people laying a big thick piece of rope at the base of the stringers with the end coming out of a hole in the deck..when the foam cures, you pull the rope out. The hope is that it leaves a channel. Can't confirm if that works or not however.

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

quick question about carpet. I was at home depot getting some material, and noticed they hade a nice selection of outdoor carpet, fully synthetic, acrilic bottom for .50 a foot of 4.40 a yard. Has anyone tried this stuff? Good? Bad?

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

I've got it in my boat, this will be the 3rd season on it... however, I'm in Seattle... boat's usable for 4 or 5 months out of the year, and if it's raining, mines covered... so, take my usage with a grain of salt.

It still looks good however.... pic attached from maiden voyage shortly after doing my floor... my transom is on line for this year... if you look to the right hand side of my engine, you can probably see quite a bit of rot and after finding this place this year and reading through all the restore threads, I've decided that before I start boating this season, that transoms getting fixed so I can trust it and don't have to take it easy... :D

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

Just a regular multipurpose carpet adhesive that I picked up at Home Depot as well spread fairly thickly with a trowel. It isn't coming up until I want it to...

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

Now ive heard a little about this, but what is the rule for thinning out poly resin? I ran out of the 5 gal I got from US Composites and bought 2 gal of 3M poly and it has to be twice as thick. It is so thick it wants to pull the matting up when you are wetting it in. I am using twice as much for the same size area. It has been very warm here so I know its not thick due to temp. What are my options? Thanks

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

nobody!! The thinning is for waterproofing only, not structural. I am just putting a few coats of 7oz fabric on the floor. I read alittle on thinning of epoxy but not poly. I'm gonna try a 1 pint mix with 1/2 oz m.e.k in it and see how it works.

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

I have almost the whole floor glassed in and I went with a 5% thinning with MEK. On Tuesday its going to be 85 here and I am going to be installing the 2 part foam. I have used this product in open puors before but never a blind pour. My question is how far apart should I drill my holes in the deck to pour thru. I will be using your standard plastic disposible beer glasses for size. Thanks.

I'm in the middle of a simular project. -18 ft sunray bowrider. I'v found Styrene thinner is the only thinner recommended for polyurethand resin. Most poly suppliers can get it. I am told it has a short shelf life. As previously said thinning is primarily used for pre-treating wood to keep out moisture before glass layup.
Nice wood work!
I'm still installing stringers. Cant wait to get mine in the water again.

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

One more thing, Im considering going back with the foam in mine. Let us know how yours went. I believe the structural advantages of the foam out weigh the negatives. When I saw the condition of my boats wood rot, I figure the froam was providing 80% of hulls the structural support. Foam is not just for floatation...
