Re: Barracuda Restoration

So as you know I have a curved transom... My solution was to cut 2/3 of the way through so it would bend so I could glue and screw it into place. That all went smoothly but I have a new problem. I had filled the cuts with P/B... but as I went under neith I noticed it dident fill fully so I think that this will allow condensation to form and deplete my transoms life and it would be much weaker so should I...

A)Wait untell I flip it after Im done painting pour resin or smooth P/B down the cuts.

B)Try and pop them out and start again.

C)It dosent matter.

Heres a pic so you know what im talking about

Epoxy? fill em with epoxy? I would just use my poly and pour it into the kerfs I had started another thread on this topic and was going to pour poly resin into it. Any objections to that? Im not looking for strength just rot resistance.

Probably okay, just poly resin with no glass tends to crack.

I might try a really smooth batch of P/B to pour down as well

mix it and force it in with a putty knive, like finishing sheet rock. you might take some 3m 5200, or 4200. in caulk tube, apply to joints, and force with putty knife.

Sounds good, Ill try that on the new piece I put in today.

I got some buddies to help me flip the boat back over today, I was debating oops method of flipping but sence I only had a 3/4 piece of ply in the transom I wasn't going to attempt it. We just rolled it on some mattresses.

Its really weird to see it rightside up! and for grinding dust to stay in the boat.

The light even works  just need to wire in a transom light.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I put in another transom piece as well and its looking fairly good, I glue and screw it onto the previous piece because of the bend. Now have to let it set so I can take the screws out and F/G it into place it looks like Im going to run outa poly thats 4 gallons so far.

I had to cut out a piece of the deck so I could properly fix the hole, Heres how to cut it out like a pumpkin lid so it will fit back in later.

poly resin alone is very weak....it will crack and give you no benefit.....

im guessing you could add some cabosil or milled fibers....and mix them light enough that you can still pour it.

in this case i think epoxy would be easyer

didnt see the second page !

if the putty knife doesnt work.....the corner cut off a plastic bag ...like a chefs decorating tool will also work

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Wish I had a read the last few posts before getting to work this afternoon, I tried doing it like a mudder but once it gets some P/B in the kerf it won't take anymore. I have to go get some more poly to finish the transom anyways so Ill get a quart of epoxy to boot ill use the chefs trick to pour it into the kerfs.

Outstanding work. Great pics too. This boat should last many years.

What are the plans for the interior?

Re: Barracuda Restoration

3 layers of tabbing is fine......dont know what glass type you are using.

id do 6 inch csm....8 inch then a 12 inch.....

the final layer of 12 inch will give you a 6 inch "grab" on the hull and the transom....

but after you seal the curfs....and before you tab wrap that transom in glass.

as far as the putty knife thing......it takes lots of practice. you really have to press it in, and have the mixture ratio right......(it should look and spread like soft margrine)
