Re: Barracuda Restoration

Seems photobucket is working now.

BoatRepair072.jpg

Transom fully glassed in, I have a total of 6 tabs :) and three over all layers I wanted it a little more than average because of the kerfs+I may have to put a jack plate on.

BoatRepair074.jpg

I installed the drainplug as well as I could, hopefully no water intrusion there. I smeared in my refined P/B (thx oops on the soft margrine tip) and wrapped the actual drain tube in cloth hopefully keeps water out.

BoatRepair077.jpg

I capped it afterwards with a few layers of cloth.

BoatRepair078.jpg

The actual cap was cut off at the transom by the previous owner so I need to fabricate a new piece, Does it matter if it is glassed directly onto the transom?

Re: Barracuda Restoration

3 layers of tabbing is fine......dont know what glass type you are using.

id do 6 inch csm....8 inch then a 12 inch.....

the final layer of 12 inch will give you a 6 inch "grab" on the hull and the transom....

but after you seal the curfs....and before you tab wrap that transom in glass.

Thx oops I got the same answer from the guy I buy supplies from

Im using csm but I have no idea of the weight I just know its fairly strong (not that I have worked with lots of cloth:rolleyes:)

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Outstanding work. Great pics too. This boat should last many years.

What are the plans for the interior?

Thanks Mark,Ahh the question I have no answer for :)

BoatRepair071.jpg

Here is a pretty good shot of the interior, I sold the old windsheild (I wasn't a fan of it) for a third of the price of the boat and I would like to enter off a high dock to that section also. Im thinking 3-4 swivel chairs with 1-2 ski/storage lockers in the deck. Im trying to decide between a SC or CC give it somewhat of a BW feel ill see how it is this year.

The stringer and deck are in way better condition than the transom was, they would probably last 5-6 years before they needed tearing out/replacing but their is no point in building a nice interior only to tear it out in a few years... So this summer im going too see how the boat is and take on a layout from there. My pocket is fairly light at the moment and gas being the way it is currently this interior will suit me just fine :p

you need all the front deck and gunnels for strength.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

i ment the upper deck around the boat, and the bow deck. you need that for strenght. i don't know if you have enough room for a ski locker in the bottom deck. we use to put our skis in those side pockets.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Any ideas on fabbing the cap for the transom? Should I glass it directly onto the transom or make it removable as well?

Thanks Fuzzey

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Well im resurrecting this thread its been a good summer of testing the boat out and seeing what I like and don't like about the boat and im really excited for phase two :) THE INTERIOR.

Heres a picture of the boat on the water Shes hit 32mph and handles beautifully. I had a few motor issues but shes running fairly good now with the carbs tuned and new impellor and a telltale installed.

That part was really quick and only took this afternoon, I even had time to watch my team pummel Denver go JAGS.

Im going to pull the motor at school for painting any recommendations on painting, what types of paint work best? Cans or HVLP gun? Im also replacing the foam inside the motor cowling (keeps falling into the carbs) ideas on what kind of foam?

Once the motor is pulled Im going to do the deck/stringer and add new foam im not sure if the CGC has the same rules as USCG but I want the security foam adds anyways. I heard something about putting a dowel of somesort on top of the stringer for eaiser glassing is that right or what should I use.

My cheif concern on replacing the deck and stringer is the trailers support as its a roller trailer what do you guys think about attaching 2x4s to the cap for lateral support?

Also from what I have seen my boat has one stringer and no lateral supports this has caused the deck to bow on either side of it could I add later supports or is it smarter to keep it as is so stresses on the hull don't change?

new supports red*

Thanks in advance, I want to start work as soon as possible so Im getting it all out in the open:)

Nicely done Fussey.
It's hard to tell from the pics but if you have the enough space under your gunwales and 5" or 6"of width, you could make a ski locker there: like on my Tracker The door does not need to be full (ski/rod) lenght just the pocket(s).

Thanks, I haden't thought of a locker like that I was thinking of a locker of somesort in the deck, ill be considering that idea for sure. All storage ideas are welcome and appreacated. Ill try and post some plans of what im thinking of doing soon.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Well im truely back at it as I have redeveloped the "itch". I made some PB out of some old poly from the start of the summer to fill all the holes in the cap from old rivets/rodholdes ect.

BoatRepair130.jpg

I stuck a piece of tape under the holes and kicked a hot batch of PB to fill the holes.

BoatRepair131.jpg

I should have wiped the excess off more thoughly as it will take some time sanding them.

BoatRepair129.jpg

This is where the old shelves were took some grinding to get em off.

Im planning on leaving the boat on this trailer (roller) and add some 2x4s for lateral support as I take out the stringers/deck and redo them Im thinking this should be ok because it will be put back im within the next week week and a half? And shouldent allow the hull to warp.

Changing trailers is not an option but I could add some beams under the boat for more support is this needed?

Thanks Fuzzy

Re: Barracuda Restoration

You could make a front and rear cradle with full lenght bunks under your strakes. That would support the hull much better with you walking on it. You could put casters on the cradles and move it around and you'd be lower to the ground, easier to work on.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I think ill do half of that, Ill put full lengh bunks under the strakes (mabey permently) it would make the trailer much eaiser to load-unload. I like the idea of lowering the boat so ill just take the wheels/springs off taking the boat off wouldent be worth the hassel.

Fuzzy

p.s. only sanding today no real update worth photos, Motor is comming off tommorow so the real tear out will begin shortly.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Sadly my baby is stuck in the school shop today (only our second night apart)
So the motor is pulled and work can really commence now im going to be adding some sort of supports under the strakes as well as some 2x4s across the cap.

I have resin+foam+cloth comming in friday so the fun can really start soon!!

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I got the boat back from school today and began!!

Final shot of the boat like this

BoatRepair134.jpg

I cut around the edge of the deck with my grinder right on the edge of the wood. at the bow the previous console was screwed into the deck and not protected letting it rot excessivly this allowed the fiberglass to be peeled off with ease and the wood pop right out (So 1 piece so far!) Then I took the circular saw and cut down the middle of the deck just deep enough to cut through the plywood but not through the hull if something should go horribly wrong. Another 5 minutes later and both pieces popped right out. So three pieces in total came out of the deck very satisfiying work.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Then their is plenty of hull cleaning to be done before I take the stringer out.

I plan on getting the new stringer in this weekend then pouring the foam and installing the deck during next week.

Im planning on using the pour and trim method then installing the deck even though it may waste more foam, I don't want to run the risk of blowing a hole in my hull
