Re: Barracuda Restoration

I have been doing that since I got the new grinder thx TD.

I havent had any updates for a few days but I have been doing lots.

I fully glassed in and sealed the stringer its way stronger than the original by far.

I now have the deck fully installed. I have 2 layers of tabbing all around and one more larger tab is comming after the deck is fully glassed in.

I still have some wood work to do on the bilge but im very close to foam and a full layer of glass.

I built the step for a few reasons one being when it get water in her it will all go to the stern and not slosh all around the boat, two being it is just the right size to hold the gas tanks so I can keep then in the boat for transport (big bonus)

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Not too much done today because my mask is toast probably should of changed the filters a while ago, hopefully ill get a new one tommorow. It was nice to step back from the grinder for a while.

I got a bunch of glass cut for the deck and the jack plate removed, man was I ever boating in some dirty water!! under the jack plate it was stained thick with silty black crap! Soo thick I could write in it. Good thing I was washing the rest of the boat after every use.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I got some hot weather today so I poured the from with help from my Uncle, he helped me mix and pour the foam and my Dad the camera man.

I haven't seen any sequences of pouring foam before so here we go....

I was using 2lb 1to1 mix foam, Once mixed you have about 60 seconds to pour before it starts to react and expand.

I had 2 containers that were used for "A" and "B" and a new container was used for the "Mix"

Here is A

Here is B

I hope this helps anyone unsure about poring foam. It isn't too difficult but is great to have an extra pair of hands. Make sure to have all your supplies ready before hand. Another thing I missed was to tip the bow DOWN to let the foam flow to the bow and then expand back to the next set of holes.

I missed these photos,

I drilled out 10 holes with a 3" hole saw to pour the foam into along the stringer.

Thanks but I don't think im close to being a pro.

I trick my self to thinking its warmer if I wear flipflops + I don't ruin my shoes this way :)

Initally I wasn't going to do the foam like this but the pros outweighed the cons in this case. If you do it like this drill plenty of release holes and don't use too much foam at a time.

The pros were: Way less labour involved after the foam is poured.

Less waste

Cons: could blow a hole in the hull

Would be very hard to trim flat and get a strong seal to the bottom of the deck.

Might miss spots and have empty areas.

If you are thinking of pouring foam decide which is more important.

I think that the chance of damaging the hull is very small please chime in with any bad experiences.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Today I got lots done with the warm weather.

I drilled out the holes where the foam was with a spade bit with out the tip. Then reinstaled the plugs with P/B.

Ground the deck for the 7th time making it as smooth as possible for the fiberglass soon to come also filling all the little nicks and cracks ect with P/B.

Then came 2 layers of cloth:

First I soaked the deck then applied the CSM

Here is how the plugs look

Tommorow I hope to have the bilge + area all glassed in. Then I have some woodwork and a console to design.

Excellent work. That floor should last a LONG time the way you've done it.

:eek::eek: me neither....ohmy gosh man....you should see my work running shoes....there just toast....and you in bare feet !

as far as safety goes around boat building fuzz.....flip flops would not be my first choice!

its looking really good man ! however....you said 2 layers went on the deck.....was that csm?.....you need a minimum of 8 oz on the deck bud try a finishing veil.....it will leave you smoother than csm by far.

cheers

OK OK OK :D I guess I have to explain the situation It is very rare for me to wear flip flops working on the boat but to get my dad to come take pictures he wasn't going to wear his shoes so he had to wear mine... And I wasn't about to ruin a nice pair of socks either :D

On the deck I laid down two layers of 6oz csm so im covered on thickness.
I would have loved to lay down a finishing veil but thats not in the budget so the area that will be walked on is going to be sanded as smooth as I can get it I do have all winter so it shouldent be to bad....

Thanks for all the support guys

Just curious,

why didnt you do all the foam before the deck...similiar to how they spray foam on home walls between the grame them put the wall ove it so its level and solid?

should be pretty easy to cut with a saw to get the whole floor perfect and then lay the deck on it?

I thought of this but it would be practicly impossible to cut it level with only one stringer (compared cutting the foam stud to stud) and its a lot more work. I discussed this with my boat guy and he talked me into doing it this way. You also don't waste nearly as much foam as you would doing it like that.

I believe it would be stronger to do the foam this way as well because it expands right up to the deck and makes a tight seal (in theory)

If you are thinking of poring foam do whatever method you are comfortable with.

Anymore questions feel free to ask

That puts you in an interesting situation with the foam,

I believe foam is only required on boats under 21' (USCG rule not sure if it is CCG rule as well)

Depending on your boat it may be needed for structure if you can call the manufacture and see what they tell you.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

My manuf. went out of business like 10 years ago....it might add strength to the hull because the sides are very thin and not sure if the bottoms are either....guess I can pull some out and ill see.
