Re: Barracuda Restoration

What the heck is wrong with you?!! When I was 16 it was all I could do to catch a bus and build a baloney sandwich!!

Holy Crap!!

All kidding aside... that is an impressive rebuild for any age. So far all I have seen is a grinder and a saw and a uni-cycle... what else in the way of tools were you using? Do you have a shop compressor?

What was your source and cost on resin and mat? I was being charged through the nose in Ottawa for poly no wax... I would be willing to travel as my next project will require quite a few gallons. Been to London to see the Knights play... great little city. (Better than Hamilton... :D)

The boat looks better without a windshield BTW...

Sick skills on the glassing... I kept getting bubble and boils on my bends and corners... Impressive.

*Insert Don Cherry Voice here*

That's one good Canadian kid I tells ya...

Thanks its something I really enjoy.

For tools I use: grinder, jig saw, circ saw, drill, sawzall and a bunch off sanders and of course heaters! I do have a shopvac for air. I wish I had a shop compressor because glass dust eats electric tools.

http://www.eversweb.on.ca/HeritageMarineEng/index2.htm is where I get glass supplies. Great place great people.

The resin is (was) 42$ a gallon and 6$ for hardener

and mat is approx 6$ meter (4' wide) for 6oz csm

That windshield sure was ugly before + it made it a $100 boat :) once sold.
I woulden't say London is a great town theres no water! and is filled with old people (no offence :)) Have you been down the the JLC to see the knights or was it the icedogs arena? The JLC is awesome!!

Good luck on supplies, where do you live now hamilton,Gatineau Hills or ottawa? I may know someone local + there are some members from ottowa as well.

LOL! I suppose I am on the cusp of being one of those "Old People"!! I am 37 but sometimes feel 73!

I live in the Gatineau Hills... just about 11 Kms out of Ottawa on the Quebec side of the Ottawa river (AWESOME FISHING!).

Cant remember the name of the arena, it was a few years back against the Wolves... hell of a game! I was on my way back from Windsor on business... I cant stand flying so I took the bus and saw the sites on my way back.

If you have a Princess Auto out there (Like Harbor Freight for our American friends reading this), you can pick up a decent portable compressor for little $. It is worth it. Especially if and when you start to recondition your trailer. And by the sound of you, I would be willing to bet that when you get your license you are going to get an old truck or car and want to fix that up.. the air ratchets will really come in handy!

Crappy Tire has a sale going on too... for about $200 you get a compressor with a bunch of tools. Good bargain for getting into the air tools game.

... oh ya... and you can use a sprayer on your tub for the final coats!!!

Thanks for the link to the poly resin supplies!

I curved the wood before glassing it in so the water will drain out of the sides.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Major body work is coming up, I have been focusing on the cap.

Through holes need to be capped with F/G otherwise the plug will move and be noticible shortly.

All holes have been capped, the bottom should be capped off as well.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Lots of good weather this past weekend meant lots off glassing time.

I put in 2 stringers underneath the splash well for support of it and my live well.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I started on my console today!!

The mold was carved out of styrofoam.

may242009console002.jpg

Then covered it in packing tape to keep it from melting, cheers oops wasn't quite sure how I was going to do that.

may242009console007.jpg

For the first layup I used two layers of CSM with woving on the edges. I was woried about laying on all my glass and having the heat melt the tape when it kicked.

may242009console008.jpg

may242009console009.jpg

For the second layup I did Mat Woving Mat over the whole console.

may242009console010.jpg

may242009console012.jpg

The resin kicked off before I could roll all the bubbles out more body work I guess... : )

Re: Barracuda Restoration

After dinner I pulled it out of the mold. The packing tape made removal super easy and it popped right out. If it diden't come out nicely acetone was my going to be my weapon of choice see video > www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXjKYuD_AlY

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I just brought shuswap home from work where I had continued the body work because of there air tools, giant compressors and eventually paint booth hopefully soon!!

The Cap (green gel) was full of cracks and is being repaired and strengthened.
The Deck was slicked and sanded for gel coat I also water tested so it all drains properly to the bilge.

Seat boxes add storage and are way cheeper then pedestals.

The Casting deck added 9sq' of deck space as well storage.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I also made the trailer legal, welded on some fenders and converted to bunks

Now the boat won't get so dirty
October82009shuswapbodywork001.jpg

This will also keep the keel from rubbing on the trailer
