My manuf. went out of business like 10 years ago....it might add strength to the hull because the sides are very thin and not sure if the bottoms are either....guess I can pull some out and ill see.

Im just curious what kind of boat is it? somebody on here might know.
If in doubt id replace it plus it adds a feeling of secitury to your boat.

It's a 1977 22' Columbian Cuddy Cabin...I've got many photo's on here and someone said they had a smaller version but not much info.

Beautiful Lap Strake boat by the way, they always stand out to me. Keep up the restoration it will look awesome!!

Im very happy with my progress, the goal was to finish the structural parts of the boat before it got to cold for fiberglassing which im done

Today I started fabricating a console it will be made of wood and fiberglass.

I used some spare 2lb foam and poured it in a garbage bag so I could make a mold.

Here is where im at:

In the last two pics I have the hight it will sit at give or take an " or two

This is a shot facing aft

As you can probably tell this is my first attempt at making a mold I have plenty of work to do on making it prefect any tips would be greatly appreciated.

To make it clear it won't be a release mold but rather a form that I will glass over then grind out the foam. Also im only really concerned about the top edges and the face the other parts I can do "on the fly" as I glass it into the boat.

Fuzzy, I have used Styrofoam to make small molds, easy to cut, glue, shape, fill and sand. Glass it over. To remove the styrofoam just pour some gasoline in where the foam is and it eats it up, soap wash and you're done.

I may do that if this mold is not quite right. Did the resin melt the styrofoam at all? that would be my main concern with styrofoam.

I do have some old gas I need to get rid of hmmm....

Sorry, I should have told you in my post. You can NOT use polyester resins on Styrofoam (polystyrene) You'll need to use an Epoxy based resin. There was a post here (I think) where a guy made a FG Radar Arch using that method.
I made some door panels and shifter consoles for my (custom) cars in the past. They all came out pretty well. Cheap to make and easy to sculpt.
I just used some scrap found in Mall store dumpsters.

well I ended up getting some styrofoam so ill test it with resin and if it melts try coating the styrofoam with putty or something similer.

I am going to delay the final building of the console untell I get all my measurements.

It also looks like we have had our final warm spell so most of my F/G and painting will be delayed untell the spring.... Which is good so I can do all the wood working and most of the wiring.

I want to tell you that you have given me three examples and tips that I will use on my rebuild, thanks. I have a few questions to ask you that also would help me. Just your best guess would be great, it would help me to guess how much I need to buy.
Question 1. How much fiberglass resin did you use? Quart or gallon wise!
Question 2. How many feet of fiberglass cloth did you use?
Question 3. How much foam did you use?

I am 48 years old and I never was fortunate enough to have children let alone to have a son. Your father should be (and probably is) proud of you and to have a young man like you for a son. Instead of drinking and using drugs your doing other things that are a far greater and more rewarding choice in life.
I see a lot of myself in you as far as getting dirty and doing things at your age.

Now at 48 after many years of me thinking ?I can do that!? I have been able to build and rebuild many things in life. Right now my neighbors think that I can do anything because so far they seen me convert my house from electric to all gas appliances, install my furnace, rebuild a Ford F150, a camper, and now a boat along with many other things.

What I?m saying is that it all starts with an attitude like you have of ?I can do that!? I always have said ?If another person can build it so can I!? Well I limit that up to, but not to include rocket science!

Keep up the good work and know that you just taught a 48 year old guy a few things!

It's been a while since I looked at this project. It is right in line with some of the most thorough of rebuilds. Kudos to you. As a youth, I brought an old VW bug back to life with my dad that had been sitting for 10 years. It was a great experience and taught me a great deal of things, the most important being that I could accomplish much more that I thought I was capable of, I just had to try my best. All the "tools" my dad had given me ( by teaching me and showing me how ) added up to the confidence I now have in myself to do many things...because I know how to tackle them, or I know how to find out how to tackle them. You'll be the same kind of guy that won't throw out something just because it stopped working. You'll at least try to fix it first. If your best attempts don't fix it, then you'll toss it. Most likely you'll at least get some more life out of whatever it is until it finally goes into the round file ( garbage ).

Neat little boat, btw. And @32mph, it must seem like you are just flying across the water in it ( especially the way the steering wheel was mounted previously! ). I was hoping to see that getting scrapped for something different. Are you going to keep the cable steering, or opt for a teleflex cable style instead?

Glad to see my thread has helped, these forums are great for anything boating.

As for supplies:

Poly resin: (definetly not in quarts) I bought 13 gallons and have used about 10 to date with plans for the other 3 to come.

I have been using a 6oz csm cloth and have bought about 30m (4ft wide) but still have plenty left.

Foam:I used just under 2 gallons (A+B) for under the deck I plan on adding more foam near the bow as well as the stern to float that motor.

It also depends if you are using Epoxy or Poly resin this is important because it will change the amount of resin + cloth you will need

Good luck on the Resto looks like your getting lots done!

Thanks, she handles large wakeboard wakes comming from all directions fairly well (you find this out when the motor dies in the middle of the lake)

O man she can be a sketchy ride at that speed. I never really got the steering tight enough so they would be 5-8" of play at wot so you would have to guess the way the motor was gonna go before it did

Im super excited for adding my new console it was like driving a bus with the steering wheel at my ankles. As well having the bench that far back diden't help (partly my fault). I plan on putting a push pull system in for reliability and so I can relax driving on plane.

Why yes it is!!! to an extent

it is thickend resin use for structurally bedding/attatching stringers transom decks ect. It is called P/B or Peanut Butter because you thicken it to a peaunut butter constiency.

you can use:

wood flour (not saw dust)

colloidal silica

Phenolic Mircro Balloons

glass bubbles

chopped F/G

for thickeners.

Holy Crap!!

All kidding aside... that is an impressive rebuild for any age. So far all I have seen is a grinder and a saw and a uni-cycle... what else in the way of tools were you using? Do you have a shop compressor?

What was your source and cost on resin and mat? I was being charged through the nose in Ottawa for poly no wax... I would be willing to travel as my next project will require quite a few gallons. Been to London to see the Knights play... great little city. (Better than Hamilton... )

The boat looks better without a windshield BTW...

Sick skills on the glassing... I kept getting bubble and boils on my bends and corners... Impressive.
