Basic Evinrude 15 question

Hi all. I'm new here and I have a dumb question. I inherited a boat with an Evinrude 15 outboard and I'm trying to figure out how to take the cowling off the top of the motor to inspect the inside before I try to start it. Don't know anything about outboards. There seems to be a pull handle on the back of the cowling but I don't know if It pulls up or back or what (it's stiff). Any help? Seems a little frozen. What can I use to limber it up to pull off the top?

Is this a 56 model / 66 model an 86 model or 96 model ??----On 74 to 92 models at the back / underneath of the lower cowling there is a latch.-----Release it and the cowling might fall off.

I see a single latch on the back. Does it pull upward or straight back? Is it internally hinged? It's hard to move and I'm afraid of breaking it if I pull it the wrong way too hard.

I'm trying to find an exploded view of the inside of the cowl so I can get an idea of where it is safe to apply pressure. Not having much luck.

Model # or picture MUST be posted.----From 93 to 96 these motors had an oddball / poorly designed latch.

Most likely it pulls down....might need penetrating oil and or heat.

You have much to learn my friend.

Happy easterweeny!

ok if all else fails
drill a " side" 1/8 hole in line with the rear latch mechanism... or just above it ..........spray wd40 or similar release agent with the plastic straw

repair.. plug the hole with crazy glue and baking soda. put a piece of scotchtape on the outside surface and fill/repair from behind. fill the hole with baking soda and apply crazy glue for an instant repair remove scotch tape paint touch up when finished

Oh man thanks but that is older I think than my engine. Mine includes electric start (wires coming out of the front lead to a rusted terminal block in the boat). I'm pretty sure the handle is lever hinged toward the front of the engine, so it would pull up and forward to remove but it is frozen in place. I'm about the try forcing it or drilling a hole near where I think the hinge is and squirting in WD40.

DUDE that did it! Opened right up. Nothing seems frozen or corroded (light patina). Looks pretty clean, considering It's probly been out there for years in the weather. Now I'm looking for a gas tank to connect to it.
