I hate to dig up a thread from last year...but I just came across this. I had a TX-17 (1994 I believe). The guy I bought it from lived on a restricted HP lake and had a 9.9 on it. Needless to say, that didn't last too long. A friend of mine had a 100hp Merc - early 1990's model. The boat was rated for 75hp, but I figured i'd give it a shot -- I had no problems at all. I was a little worried with the weight at first, but it was fine. Unless 3 grown men were all standing on the back deck, it was fine.
The top speed I hit was around 55...that was on a calm day with no wind/no chop. Handling was fine, and hole-shot was incredible. Just my experience though.
