Re: battery problem

Green-horn,
Push the throttle to WOT and crank the motor...does it do the same thing? I've been following this thread and find a couple things odd. Like the others on here offering advise....it's a connection issue. Lets do this, you have 12.5 at the solenoid "IN" during cranking. You have 12.5 on the "OUT" side of the solenoid, you have 12.5V at the starter +? You also cleaned all the grounds really good with sandpaper, applied grease and tightened them down? To me....this sounds like a classic case of a bad power connection....

Re: battery problem

no im sure i was standing there when he took it from me and installed it on a 150 and it sated up fine

I'm not trying to be a bother here- You saw the mechanic take you into the back of his shop and install your starter on a 150 and fire it up, remove it and give it back. Most shops won't let you in as a liability, at least here in Canada it's almost impossible unless it's a buddy to watch them work. Sounds fishy pardon the pun but if the person is reputable then we gotta believe him. Is the starter binding against the flywheel? I know sometimes they need to be shimmed in order to work properly but that's usually on a swap to a different starter. Sounds like either the motor is the issue or the starter. Usually if the motor is the issue you can't turn it over easy by hand. Spark shouldn't affect it, I've starter 4 cylinder firing on 2 and they start right up.

Do you have a part number or casting number off the starter, is it possible you got the wrong starter back????

Re: battery problem

I think it is your Starter as well. Take it to a different shop and have it load tested. If in fact it is something with the motor I think you can eliminate the lower end as mentioned before as it would do it with the spark plugs in or out with a lower end problem. just curious though, when the strater quits, if you try again immediatly does it again work or is it still bound, can you turn it by hand, that may help you figure out if it is a mechanical problem or electrical problem.

Ok cool, just checking. After doing all that, either a clearance issue or the starter is botched. If you know this guy well, ask him to borrow the starter off of the 150 and try it, nothing like trying before buying.

Re: battery problem

Starter bendix binding against the flywheel, raise the bendix up by hand and check to makes sure the clearance is ok.

Re: battery problem

Let me see...
Starter was tested on another engine and works fine?
Battery was replaced plus all new wires.
Compression test with plugs remove showed 35 during one test then 65 (Range for this engine is 100-135)
What next solenoid? You can bypass it and test again.

Re: battery problem

I think it's haunted!

If I were you I'd get my voltmeter out & try it across the battery terminals & hit the key, get a reading.

Then try it across the starter terminal & the main negative on the block, hit the key & get a reading.

Did you replace the cables with ones of equal size?

Re: battery problem

At this point you MUST pull the heads and inspect the cylinders, if its scored really bad which I think it is your starter will NEVER crank it enough for a compression test, hence the low numbers you posted. A complete new set of gaskets for this engine is cheap if no damage is seen or found. This engine is suffering from internal damage and must be inspected. I never thought is was electrical related. I can only post me two cents its up to the owner to decide.
This post was created with the intention of it been the battery, at some point we have to move to the next phase of troubleshooting.
Please keep us posted, I am curious to see what you find.
