Re: Bayliner boats

I love boats, owned a bayliner for 12 years, a great boat, I got what I paid for, 9,500$ in 1992, sold it last year for 6500$ Not the best built boat ( it was a 1990). I put very little money, but alot of time into maitenece. It tended to puke out alot of fastners. With a little TLC it held its value and gave me no major problems(it was an 1850 capri). When it was time to move up I almost put an offer on a cierra, they have one of the nicest layouts in the 23 to 25 ft range. But it only had a 4.3l engine. Ended up with a 94 sundancer. It has a bigger engine, and is a very solid and well put together, but I don't like the cockpit layout. If I decide to buy another Bayliner (ciera) and Crownline will the first 2 I look at ( price + layout). As far as problems with the newer ones, the ones I've looked at seem to be more solid than the older ones. The fastners and hardware are better quality. The only thing I can see to knock, are the bulkheads, and decks don't seem to be as thick,or dense.. I'm not quite sure how say it.... maybe substantial as some of the higher priced copetition. Maybe thats a good thing?? keep the weight down?

Jim

Re: Bayliner boats

Just so nobody gets the wrong idea about my comment, my first boat (i'm on my second now) was a 1988 bayliner Capri 1950. As much as you hear the brand name bashed, I loved that boat and it served me well. Lost no money on it so I used it for a year for the cost of gas. Put a lot of work into it, some was bayliner's fault, some was the fault of poor maintenance over 16 years of life. If I had paid for labor or didn't know how to do A LOT myself I would have sold the boat, junked the boat, or otherwise ended up in a bad spot. I have looked at the newer ones and it they really are a huge improvement over the older ones. Time will tell.

Oh boy now I've added fuel to the flames.... :)

I love the way the Bayliner looks that sold me in the first place. I did get a good deal as they are know as "trash". As the saying goes another mans trash is another mans treasure.

I like the force motor for 1 good reason. I can work on it. I like the boat its got just about all new equipment. Some stuff Bayliner (in 1988) skimped on and some just wore out. I drilled a few holes to mount som new stuff and the gelcoat is about 35 mills. Thats pretty good.

What would I buy if I wanted a new boat. Bayliner maybe but would look around.

Re: Bayliner boats

Ok. Just to make the bayliner haters cringe.......Running a 98 2802 Trophy now, no problems other than normal fishing boat stuff.

About the only thing so far that could be better is that it needs things like gas struts instead of the spring lifts on hatches..that type of thing. Better quality than several boats I have had, and equal to the rest of them. It isn't a Grady or a Whaler.....but I could repower the thing and buy several years worth of fuel for it and still not have the money in it that I would have in a Grady or Whaler.

We fish it hard, big water, long runs, overnights, I have not been dissappointed. And considering I bought it 3 years old with under 300 hours on it for under 40k......I can thank the Bayliner bashers for helping me get a steal on the thing....nothing like a bunch of unfounded rumor and prejudice to drive the price down!!!!!

I can say this, after running the thing hard and flopping a lot of fish in the boat, I will wear the current engines out before I do the hull.

Re: Bayliner boats

My first boat was a 1991 2050 bayliner with a 4.3 V6. It was a great boat, cheap to operate and I had very few problems with it. It wasn't a great rough water boat, but sure was an inexpensive way to start.

I wouldn't touch a bayliner.

Your better off buying an older, maybe smaller quality boat, it will cost you less in the long run, and you'll spend your days off on the water, not messing a poorley condtructed boat in the driveway.

I have yet to see someone on the water in a bayliner who looked like they knew what they where doing, its usally a first boat for people, then they get smarter and buy something better

You gotta get out on the water more or start looking at men's boats Ryan. Are you saying the owners of most 57, 52, 47, 45, 35, 32 or 30 footers, who may have shelled out half a million of their hard-earned bucks, have no idea what they're doing, or have just spent that money on junk? Do you have evidence, or are you just (like most) repeating an urban legend?

I absolutely defy anyone to tell me what's wrong with my Bayliner. I've thrown down this gauntlet before, and got no intelligent responses. Tell me where to look, I'll take a picture and post it here for all to see.

Any takers this time around, all you know-it-alls? :p

Re: Bayliner boats

Make a fist, and pound it on the side of your hull, and watch it boe in, then pound on a side of a parker, Grady or whaler and feel a solid thump with no movment

Re: Bayliner boats

Ryan, I have a hull sample from a 1985 Bayliner 2850 Contessa. Its just under an inch thick. I am pretty sure Mike's 305 won't bow in either.

The fact is, neither you nor Bondo know your *** from your elbow. If you did you won't be making statements like this. In fact, I can't even see what sh*theap Bondo has in his avatar, but it looks like the last time it saw water Eisenhower was in office.

Really, why would anyone buy a Bayliner? They fall apart! Look, here is me, at 40 mph in Lake Michigan, launching off a 3 foot roller. If you look carefully, you can see the hull deflect!

I have many more pics like that too, so that means I did that repeatedly. Stringers are solid as a rock, by the way.

Oh yeah, I recall seeing something about Bayliners being underpowered. So here is a pic of me struggling to get the boat up to speed. That speed being 60 mph, I was still at 57 and climbing:

normal_fullthrottle.jpg

Here is a pic of two Crownlines being shown the backside of my boat. Must be because all the parts falling off has made it lighter:

crownline28.jpg

I run my boat HARD and put it away wet every single time. I use my boat harder than most everyone else on my water way, and I make no apologies for it. This is my SECOND Bayliner....the first gave me just as good service as this one is. I swear by them.

You can keep your more expensive boats. THe low price allows me to get out and enjoy my time on the water. I can't afford a Grady or a Cobalt, and I don't want a fishing center console. I have towed Sea Rays in, raced Crownlines, and held the water with Cobalts costing thousands more, with no adverse affects. My boat is aging gracefully and NEVER fails to start. It has the same engine as competing boats, and its built BETTER than other boats (Sae Ray specifically, and I can back that statement up.)

Really....why would anyone want to be intelligent and buy a Bayliner....
