Thanks!

Here's some pics showing half of the seat I cleaned with the erasers and the other half I did not. Before using the erasers I wiped them down with simple green.

One tip I have, is to rinse and re-use the erasers. I was able to rinse them 4 or 5 times before they crumbled up and became unusable.

Yea, I'm pretty happy with the results. There are still some stains that could not be removed, but I'm looking for some stronger chemicals that might take them out. Also a few small rips that I'm going to buy one of those vinyl repair kits to fix.

I installed the pump last night. The round part you see hooked to the pump is a metal screen filter.

Just wondering why there seems to be empty space on eather side of the center of the transom? The transom should go the entire width of the back of the boat if im not mistaken. It looks like the wood is just inside the middle of the transom and thats all. if you look you can see empty voids there. Just wondering if you can hang a outboard with just some of the transom replaced and the sides just empty voids?

Yup, its a 3 piece design. Came that way from the factory. If you look closely, you will see a piece of plywood on the left and right sides, but they are not one piece.

Why? I don't know.

Yeah I also noticed that..makes me kinda nervous...couldnt the motor possibly tear the fiberglass and rip the transom right out it wasnt repaired correctly?

I suppose it could.

But I replicated the factory setup, and actually added a little more strength.

On the inside of the transom, under the splash well, it was originally covered in a thin sprayed on fiberglass coating. I covered the new transom in fiberglass mat that is thicker than the factory covering, and where the new transom meets the rest of the boat, I added 2 layers of mat.

And those voids that were mentioned, I cut small pieces of plywood to fill those voids. I then added 2 layers of fiberglass mat over the top of everything, tying it all together.

I am also considering adding a steel plate to bolt on the inside of the transom around where the motor bolts up.

My father in law offered to give me his 135hp Johnson outboard for me to use on this boat. Would that be a bad idea? I thought it might handle it since similar (or the same) boats of this era could be had with 120hp Force outboards.

My Bayliner Capri Cuddy is similar. The three piece design in that transom has a heavy center section with knee braces tying them directly to the stringers. Also the two side panels are connected to the center section with layers of glass/resin.

So its critical that the center section be glassed into the knee braces properly when making repairs.

I wouldn't worry about it coming apart, its a very strong design passing the stress of the transom directly into the stringers.

This is my Cuddy's transom and knee braces. A little different, but still the same basic design.

Got the motor mounted and fired her up for the first time in 2 years. She still runs like a champ!

Here's a link to the engine running, on facebook

I still have to adjust the throttle and shifter cables a little.

I'm going to bring her to the lake on the 4th! I can't wait! She's been down for 2 seasons!

I think I have a battery drain though. Left her hooked up overnight and the battery went dead.

Finally got her on the water today! Only had two minor problem. I had the throttle and shifter cables switched! That was interesting. Would only shift if I pulled the throttle out like it was in neutral! But it would only shift into reverse! I got her figured out and then it was running rough. Found one of the CDI boxes unplugged! After that she ran like a champ!

Diddnt take on a drop of water! I remember when I first got the boat, she would fill up pretty good and take a minute or 2 to drain!

And the transom is SOLID! Before it flexed and moved all over when towing, now it STAYS PUT!

All this and it was raining the whole time! Took me a while to get over the seats getting dirty after all that hard work I put into it from cleaning, but it was worth it!

Nice boat, I have a 1988 Bayliner cobra 1800 that I am in the process of restoring. I just got the transom put in this past weekend, but I still need to update my thread.

Great project!

We have what looks to be a boat very similar to yours (1982 Capri but red interior that has to go) that we are wondering what to do with. We have noticed that the support piece in the floor that served as the end of the ski compartment that butts up against the gas tank is rotted completely to mush.

We pulled up about 10 inches of floor over the gas tank to get a look inside that compartment and test for dryness, but off to the sides of that cross piece that supported the ski compartment door, the stringers that it connected to is really wet and soft on the port side of the boat.

Further toward the back of the boat, where the end of the gas tank sits in the engine compartment, the side of that opening is dark and wet, while the other side in that area of the rear of the tank is not.

We have thought that we should just replace the whole deck floor and at least the one whole stringer, but perhaps it isn't necessary. We have recently turned a doublewide into a house from the inside out as a husband and wife team so we aren't scared of this project! We're just taking a breather and trying to determine where best to start.

The foam seems wet near the stringer we're most concerned with. We're curious why you didn't replace the stringers on your project. The seat bases being "resined" in makes it into a much larger project. We're inclined to just start tearing out (much like we did to our entire bathroom!) but don't feel knowledgeable enough at this point about the structure of a boat to just go digging in.

Also, have you done your work with the boat on a trailer? Is this not a good idea? We don't really have a storage place to work on it off of the trailer. We're going to put it under a portable garage for the winter. Thanks for any info you can offer. I don't know if my pics are showing up for you...they didn't in the preview.
