This post is related to my earlier post about boats to avoid.
Most responses stated that the condition and care given to the boat by the previous owner was more relevant than the brand of boat it's self, which of course is good advise.
I have spoken to a number of people on the topic and many seem to think that Bayliner is at the lower end of the scale so to speak in regard to overall quality.
Is this just thier opinion or are bayliners known for poorer than average quality?

Re: Bayliner

LMAO

A new thread to start, all over again, the Bayliner subject. I look forward to following this thread right into "page 2" as well.........

Have you tried searching something like, for example "Bayliner what year improved" ?

To answer your question, they are an entry level boat, without much resale value.

Although I met a girl this past weekend with an older 25 footer, it had a great interior layout. Didn't get to ride in it though.....

Re: Bayliner

You'll get good and bad posts regarding Bayliner. Most peoples opinions on this brand are "set in stone".

Try searching this forum on the subject, you'll have plenty to read.

IMHO, Bayliner is generally considered at the lower end of the quality spectrum. I would also say they are a good value boat.

Bayliners are 'entry level'. All you need to know. The older ones, maybe pre-1994 or so, are more notorious for poor build quality, like insufficient stringer fiberglassing and stuff like that. Hit or miss. Mine is an 88 19 foot bowrider, it's in good solid shape overall. Vinyl was bad in spots but I fixed that. For what I paid for it I couldn't be happier with it. Added an 8' bimini top, GPS, fishfinder, stereo, VHF, custom built transom hatch rodholders, have less than $4000 into it, including the new engine with warranty (installed myself so no labor $$$$), boat and trailer, and all the toys I installed over the summer. Worth it to me.

It's no offshore rig, but for the bay and lakes, it's perfect. 4 can fish off it comfortably. I put over 200 hours on the new engine just this summer (so far). Out on it every single chance I get.

Re: Bayliner

I have heard them referred to as Bilgeliners, Barfliners, and other four letter prefix liners.
For all the bad talk, I see plenty of them at the in-land lakes, as well as Lake Michigan.

Re: Bayliner

JD Power and associates give bayliner the lowest marks of all the major brands. I dont own one, never have, and dont have a problem with those that do. Just noting what JD has found through consumer research.

Re: Bayliner

For a "cheap" boat, hey- you get what you pay for. Had a 15' bowrider. No frills and no thrills. But it got me on the water. I would consider another for the price, but I can only get on the water about a dozen times a year. If I was planning to use it much more I would go with something else.

But that's just me.

Re: Bayliner

I agree the line has been drawn in the sand on this issue. My take, if a boat has been cared for, stored inside, and treated with some amount of respect they all last for years. If resale is your concern, crunch the numbers. Some are better at holding their value, but they also demand a higher initial cost. I know some will argue the Searay, or Baja, or what ever they own is the best, but if left outside and abused they all reduce to their basic elements and turn into junk. If you need evidense of that look no further than Ebay. Some call Ebay "death row" for the abused. My advice...buy a boat that serves your needs in $$$, and quality.
my $0.02

It's No Use........ I've Tried Not Too...... I've checked in on this thread Several times......
OK, I'll Answer it.......... :p

Unlike Some Senators........ I Truly Believe in My Opinions,+ Convictions.............
This is Mine from about a year ago...... On the Record................... :D
Bilgeliners are built with the Least amount of Inferior materials possible ,
To create the Illusion of a Quality Boat.....

This is not only My opinion, It's a Fact ....
BTW, I Absolutely Agree with All the answers to this point....................... ;)
Luna Sea,
I Hope the Ride turns out Nice................

Re: Bayliner

Cook63, if you take everyone who has checked in here's advice (except for Bondo, because he's apparently stuck in some kind of mental vacuum) you will have received good info. Bayliners deservedly suffered from a poor reputation in the past (70s and early 80s) and Bondo has latched onto that like a sucker fish. The newer Bays are fine boats, solid and safe, built with plenty of excellent materials, to create a quality boat.

Re: Bayliner

OK Bondo...I'll challenge you right here in public. Tell me what to look for on my inferior Bayliner and I will not only check it for you but I will link to pictures of what you told me to look at. We'll see who's "living in a dream world"!

For starters: Pound for pound the quanity of materials just isn't there...............? A 300 Sundancer (with generator) weighs 12,500 lb. My Bayliner 305 (w/o generator) weighs 11,857. I'm not comparing a Bay to a Ray, it's just a comparison on weight VS a "quality" boat.

Give me some more stuff to look at so I can start fixing my POS boat before it sinks.

Re: Bayliner

On a side note, I noticed a sign hanging on a fairly new 30' Bayliner this past weekend, out at the island mooring area. I was gonna make a comment to someone but I bit my tongue...
However: I saw the same boat, with the same sign, In the river last night and had to drive by with my girl.
I asked her if she was familiar with the whole "Bayliner" business. Then I started in on the "OFFERED BY......." sign on the boat. Told her Boats are "FOR SALE", yachts are "OFFERED BY". :D :D
aND THIS WAS BY NO MEANS A YACHT..... :p :p
