Do I have to have the special tool to remove the bearing carrier nut on a 1982 115 HP Mercury? I think this seal is ok but while I had it off I thought I would go ahead and replace them all.

No you don't have to. But it's a darn good idea.

Re: Bearing Carrier Nut

You could make a tool. I made one for the bearing carrier nut off of a Mercury Mark 55E. I used a floor flange. That's steel galvanized disk with a large threaded hole in the middle to accomodate the threaded end of a pipe. It also has four screw holes that perfectly matched up with the four holes in the bearing carrier nut. <br />Look around a hardware store for ideas. Another idea I had was to take and modify a lawn mower blade to make a tool. It'll have to be dulled, of course! It already has the hole in the center; it'll just need a couple of small bolt holes drilled to accomodate some nice hard grade 8 bolts of a size to fit your bearing carrier nut.

Maybe I will just pressure test it first and see if the seal needs replacing.

Replaced the seals and pressure tested it. Test was good. Hooked up to the hose to make sure the pump was working. Plenty of water from the tale. I do have one question. The four vertical lines that are just above the cavitation plate had water coming out. The more I throttled the more came out. Is this just a return of the water that is pumped through the engine?

How did you manage to get the bearing carrier nut off?

I did not change that seal. The shift shaft seal was the bad one so I did not open that other can of worms. Water test will tell the story tomorrow.
