Bearing failure :(

Went out this weekend and made two small trips to a section of river and a small local lake. Made a few passes around the lake and fished a few places with no luck. Pulled up anchor around 9:30 and made for the launch. Made it about half way and then there was a loud BANG and the motor stopped. Tried to start up again and it was seized.

Well expecting the worst I took the lower end apart tonight. Sure enough the lower end grenaded. The bearing under the impeller blew apart and sent metal shrapnel into the gearcase. Anyone have a lead on a lower end for a 1981 DT65?

Bust out another thousand.......

DOOD! That's terrible news. Can't help, but I can empathize. My wife says I'm good at that.

Here's some pictures of the aftermath.

It had a broken skeg and an extra prop that was all beat up so that might have started the issue. I have to look at what my options are, so i will be fishing from shore.

Ah CARP! losd! That really friggin' blows!! That must of happened not long after I talked to you..

Try giving Twin City Outboards a call. Their service with me so far has not been super but their prices seem fair. They may have or know where to find a lower unit for your OB.

Otherwise watch for the 70HP on up motors out there, seems that they are popping up more and more AND should be dropping in price. Ill send ya links if I find anything good.

Sucks! Ugh!

Did you clean the unit up or is that what you found.. I see no oil there at all or gear lube.??? Just my observation. I know I never check mine on my 200 Johnson so think I will do that this week . Good luck . Check with any and all Marinas . the ones here have tons of motors out back and do nothing with them . Not interested in salvage. What is the motor? Ill look around, shipping a lower unit cant cost that much . Pugetsound

Re: Bearing failure :(

There are a few local places that I am going to call today. It was full of oil but I don't know how it was treated before Chuckn and I got it. It was not very difficult to remove but finding the replacement should be fun.

I don't know how much more money I'd throw at that oddball outboard of yours. Sorry for your misfortune.

By chance does SEI make a lower unit for your outboard.
I put a SEI upper/lower unit on my I/O and have been happy 150hrs so far.
I know they make lower units for OB of popular size and brands.
Worth a check

Re: Bearing failure :(

The motor is a 1981 Spirit 65hp, a copy of a Suzuki DT65. I found one for $250 with shipping from a source I have ordered other parts. I am thinking of this route for now and save for a Merc or something with 85hp.

I may also swap labor on this.

He has a 76' SS that he is upgrading to a 85hp Merc.

Re: Bearing failure :(

Ill check out Master Marine here in Wa. state. only three blocks away. They are a large Suzuki and Yamaha dealer have a great unmolested bone yard that they occasionaly call the scrap guy and haul it off. Says its to costly to tie up a mechanic to salvage GOOD PARTS. Pugetsound

Sure, anything if you put that 300 HP on the back of your boat! Might have to rename from the "guac yacht" to the "screemin guacr"! I'll even offer to haul you and what ever is left of your boat when that OB rips your transom off! :D
