I can see the rubber lip the bearrings seat into which may be the seal, but dont know where to go from here. I have heard that there are snap rings in place as well, but i have not got that far and i am stuck at just l looking and wondering what my next step is. Thanks for the help

What are we working on?

I'm betting on Volvo, but need the engine model and year to determine if you have a single or two bearing setup.

Thanks don. Its a 5.7l (350) with a volvo penta 280. I have followed your instruction and now i am stuck here. Was thinking of just beating them out, but read a previous post of your about the snap rings, but i cannot see them and all i see are the seals and cannot get passed them.

I did this last spring. Search ths forum for 'water in bellows' posted by me. The last post was in june 2009. I'd get you the link but i'm on my phone browser. There are seals and snap rings that need removed. Good luck.

In the link you can get an idea of what your up against.

69,71 are the two rubber seals at either end. Those get pried out carefully.

#68 is the snap ring holding the engine side bearing in place

#70 is the engine side bearing

On the outdrive side, there are 2 #68, One is holding the bearing and the other is directly behind the seal, keeping it from sliding further into the hole.

#67 is a smaller snap ring that is around the driveshaft up against the bearing.

I believe, although it's been a while now, that the easiest way to remove the driveshaft is to remove the engine side seal and snap ring, and remove the small snap ring,#67 on the outdrive side. Once these are removed you should be able to drive the shaft out the engine side of the flywheel cover with the inner bearing still on the drive shaft. Once the driveshaft is out, it will be easier to remove the rest of the snap rings and the other bearing. You're going to need a good set of snap ring pliers.;)

Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong about something.

Hope that helps.

Here is a link to the flywheel cover rebuilding from Volvo. I left it as a .pdf file so you can enlarge the picture and make it easier to see the snap rings and seal directions. It has both types of housings, so should work for any Volvo housing.

Thank you to all. Good to see you still here Cap. I got the seals off and my bearings did have a little rust on them. I needed to make sure that the seals were going on right. I made a mistake and bent the lock ring the smaller one and have to find a shop around here to order as I dont want to pay $8 for shipping it and it only cost 71 cent. lol. Question, when removing the engine, I noticed that this seal where the clamp rings go has moved out of the way. I need to know will this need to be replaced? I am attaching pics.
