Beer Styles - Your favorites?

I love beer. 37 years ago I left Chicago to work in the Miller brewery in Milwaukee, from which I retired about 22 years later. That's when I really began to learn about beer.

The problem with picking a favorite is that it's somewhat like choosing a blond, redhead, or brunette as your favorite. They're all wonderful! Just depends on what day it is!

A good stout, at the right time, is the finest thing in the world. But then someone buys you a wheat beer - banana, clove, citrus flavors all coming from the yeast in fermentation - and you suddenly have a new favorite. That lasts until you visit a friend and he pours you a nice, fresh porter with some cheese to nibble while you sip it. But a few weeks later you've just finished mowing the lawn and a neighbor comes over with two beers in his hands, one for him and one for you. Then you experience a "perfect storm" of thirst and fulfillment with a crisp, clear, easy-drinking American-style lager. Kolsch, Saison, Lambic, the list goes on and on...

Makes me feel like a rich man!

Generator12 -

So, were you required to drink beer at work?

Miller was quite popular when I was in college . . . mostly because of promotional contests, etc.

These days . . . I have to drink gluten-free beer . . . I guess those college days finally caught up to me

Like you say, different beers, different timing. I too have many many "favorites"
That is with the exception of the wheat beers. I just don't like them.

Re: Beer Styles - Your favorites?

I like anything that is not over-hopped, which has become the trend in a lot of craft brew. I have many favorites which vary by season. In the summer I like something like Stella or Yeungling (sp?); something along the lines of a nice dry lager. If I want something a little heavier, there is Fat Tire. I just tried another one of those dry lager by the name of Sessions which was really clean and nice.

For a little change of pace, I do like Lambics which tend to be a bit fruitier, but without the overwhelming banana/butterscotch tastes that you find in styles such as Hefeweisens.

In the fall and early spring, I tend to like porters; heavier but not so chunky as a stout. In the winter, I am all about the "meal in a bottle" beers like Imperial Stouts, Belgian Strongs, and Scotch Ales.

I'm not naming brands here, because I am an avid home brewer, and I tend to make my own for the most part. I don't think I've purchased anything at a store other than Yeungling or Stella for about two years now.

Unlike my unwavering preference for blondes, my beer selection varies by location and occasion

At our facility in Germany:
Kitzmann Dunkles Weissbier
Guinness

At our facility in the UK:
The house’s Cask Ale
Guinness
House Cider

At home:
Lawn mowing beer: Molson Golden Ale
Entertaining: Sam Adams and Yuengling Lager
Treat myself: Dogfish, 60 minute IPA

Those are my favorites. I don't drink much or often, so I probably don't have a particular bend I stay with. I actually kinda' like trying the different ones out.

Stone Brewing Company Arrogant Bastard Ale
Stone Brewing Ruination IPA

Basically, everything Stone makes is pretty awesome.

Stone is a California brewery although you can get it on the East coast I hear now. A lot of the flyover states don't get it yet.

Yeah I'm pretty much the same way. I like Miller High Life Light, Michelob Light, Miller Lite. When I'm feelin' fancy I'll go for a Dos XX, Corona Light or Blue Moon. I also occasionally enjoy a Leinenkugel, Yeungling, or Lancaster Brewing Co Strawberry Wheat.

Problem is, here in stupid PA, I don't often get more specialty beers because although I may very well like them, I don't want to drink a whole friggin' case of it. So I generally get a case of the Lites.

What do light beers and making love in a canoe have in common?

They are both (insert 4 letter word here + "ing") near water.

Sounds like a joke a buddy of mine would be all about. The thought of drinking light beer is hateful to him. He instead regularly quaffs Old Milwaukee, and Milwaukee's Best. The analogy he uses to describe this is "I prefer the strait 30 weight, non-detergent beers" :D

I can tolerate the light stuff. Sometimes you just want something light and refreshing (hot summer day after mowing the lawn), and some of the light beers out there (like Sam Adams Light) are pretty tasty.
