Bell houising removal? Easy way?

Hello,
I am new to this forum and to boats. I just picked up a 77 Glastron V184 with a AQ170 (B30) and a 280 outdrive. The u-joints gave out and broke the bell housing and the housing on the upper drive. What is the easiest way to remove the bell housing. Is it possible to remove the transom shield and pull it out from the back or is pulling the motor the only way?

Also the yoke on the motor side is still in there, this should just pull straight out right? I have tried prying it out but I am having no luck. I assume when you would be pulling the upper drive this whole piece just slips out as one assembly, yokes u-joints and all? I did order a new bell housing and upper drive so I really don't need the old one disassembled but I was just curious.

Thanks for the help!
Keith

easiest way to remove the bell housing.

There is only 1 way, and that is to remove the upper gear box, then remove the 6 bolts holding the clamp ring in, remove the engine and bell housing as an assembly, then remove the bell housing from the engine.

Sounds like you have a lot of very expensive parts that are bad. Might want to check out this link.

Ok thats what I was thinking. So far I have a bell housing and a rebuilt upper assembly on the way. Also ordered a kit with all the bellows and the transom ring seal. I am still under a grand with the boat and parts. Hope I can keep it that way, for now anyways.

What about the drive yokes and u-joints? Is that assembly just supposed to pull away from the bell housing shaft?

Thanks!

Yes. The whole assembly slides out with the transmission.
Just did it a few days ago.
