bench test choke solenoid

Is there a bench test for a choke solenoid off of a '56 Johnson 30hp ( 6 volt )

Sure. It's just an electomagnet. Just hook up a + wire to the only wire terminal on the solenoid, then attach a ground to the body of the solenoid. It should magnetize the rascal instantly and suck the heck out of the iron cylinder that the choke actuator is attached to up into the body of the solenoid. The trick is having a 6 volt battery, or using a resistor in series with a 12 volt battery. You might even get away with using a 12 volt battery but I've never done it so I don't suggest it.

Of course. Ground a 6V battery (-) to the solenoid body and connect the battery (+) to the wire terminal on the solenoid. The plunger should pull in with a strong snap.

That would be very low amperage so one of those 6V lantern batteries should work. I would advise using 12V as you could burn it up.
