What 2 stroke oil would you recommend for old (29 year old) Tohatsu
M18A ?
I used fuel that came with the motor but don't know what 2 stroke oil previous owner used.
I will use TC-W3 but not sure which one.
Would old motor benefit from new technology oils or it makes no difference?
Not sure what Tohatsu recommends and nearest dealer is long way away.

Best regards
Andrew

The standard is to use TCW-3; Ratio is 50:1. That said, any good TCW-3 is adequate. They are all good today. All TCW-3 oils are much better than the oils of old.

As a Tohatsu dealer, we use the Factory lubes in our motors when we service them, and have had good results.

In my own personal equipment, I have successfully used amsoil (the product for water-cooled 2-stroke non-competion applications), which runs at a ratio of 100:1 in a 50:1 application. Less oil means less smoke -- and less plug fouling. But some really object to the particular odor of the amsoil smoke. YMMV.

Thanks pvanv.
Is the Factory lube similar to Quicksilver lube used by Mercury?

As long as it's TCW3 you should be good to go.

I used Quicksilver in my old Johnson 6hp and I never had any
problems so I will stick to it.
Thanks

Does that mean I could safely use amsoil at a 100:1 ratio in My NS30A3 instead of 50:1?
Reason I ask a 2 stroke might be used for trolling like a 4 stroke.
Thanks

Has less smoke, and amount (100:1) same lubricant properties as it were a 50:1 ratio ? Will it work ok at any throttle position, inckuding extended wot cruises ? Been using Chevron TCW-3 for years, will continue to stick with this brand.

Happy Boating

Opinion only:

It should work OK. It would not be OK from a warranty standpoint, but then you are long past warranty. You can check with amsoil for the recommendations they have for your application.

Many many years ago, OB's ran at ratios of 16:1 or 24:1. That was before TCW3 oil specs came out; Today, they run with less oil in the mix -- typically 50:1, using TCW3. Modern direct-injected motors use even less oil. But they are using very very good oils -- even better than just TCW3. Yes, Amsoil claims that you can use their product at 100:1 in a 50:1 premix motor. I used to do it with my ancient 15 hp johnny-rude. Some people did object to the odor of the amsoil, which was definitely different than the smell of dino oil.

The reasons that I used the 100:1 oil were: Less oil gave less plug fouling, and even at a higher cost per ounce, running half the oil was actually cheaper than running dino TCW3 at 50:1.

Of course, now that I'm running 4-stroke motors, the point is moot for me.

bit of a thread revival, when you mention non competion use, what exactly do you mean by that?
