I am going up north to do some fishing this week. I generally take some time to look over my vehicle and trailer in advance to make sure I am 100% road worthy. Yesterday I was checking my tires and noticed that the tread on my truck tires was pretty worn and I had a lot of cracks in the tires. I decided even though I really dont have the money to do it, to get new tires before my trip. I asked them to put the old tires in the back of my truck so I wouldnt have to pay the disposal fee. When I was paying they told me I was lucky to have replaced them when I did. I figured that they were just saying that because they were happy to have my business. It wasnt until i examined them when I got home that I realized how truly lucky I was......

Here is a pic of one of the tires. 3 of the 4 were like this, and I didnt notice it when the tires were on the truck because they were on the back side of the tire. Here is a picture of my brand new ties. Dayton Timberline AT's. Moral of the story, and we have heard it before....its very important to check your vehicle tires.

yikes, those look REALLY worn out. I would've made 'em a priority long ago. Good that you bit the bullet when you did... but you might wanna rotate the new ones once in a while. Part of the benefit of rotating is that you get a good chance to look 'em over.

Some friendly advice, get your vehicle alignment checked. That wear is not even enough, and is almost definately a sign of poor alignment. It also looks like that one tire was out of balance a little. Did it have a vibration to it?

Just a little advice from a former mechanic. Will save you a few galons of gas a year too getting it lined up.

Sean - I have heard and read that as well. I hope that it holds true

Deputy- I just had the entire alignment pretty much done. After this http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=010496;p=1#000000. New bearings, control arms, pitman rods, steering box, tie rods, etc. I had suspected that my alignment was messed up awhile ago, but never had it checked out until i messed up the front end and it was too late to see if it was or not...
The rear axel is about 2 years old and i just had the seals redone on it. I believe those tires were on it with the previous axel.

BF- Now that I got these tires, rotations are free from the shop, but I am definately gonna pay much closer attention to them as I go along. I wanted to replace them long ago, but the above link cost me $1,600 to fix and I just didn't have the funds. I too am glad I bit the bullet

Hey Pony, where'd you get the tires from? I wish I'd have known, my (former) step-dad is National Retail Sales manager for Pomps tire.

Sean

Got them through my mechanics warehouse. $85 a tire plus $5 per tire to balance etc.

Re: Best $400 I have ever spent.

Thanks for the reminder, I have to get new tires for the Ranger soon. I was going to do it last Fall, but decided they had a few more mile in them.

The tires I have now are BF Goodrich All terrain T/As. Its hard to beleive, but I have 71,000 miles on them. I rotate them every oil change, but then I go 10,000 mile on oil changes too. They are not slick, but I sure do need new ones.

Pony hope you enjoy you new treads. Reminds me of the beast $400 bucks I ever spent. In 1988 I bought a 1968 Camero convertible it had a 327. Wish I still had that car. Babies came and the wife wanted me to sell it.

Hey LD- I was considering BF's All terrains, but I just didnt have the money. When these go I would like to get some beefy BFs.....like the 31's with some really aggressive tread. You said you have lots of miles on your BF's, how are they otherwise? noisy? ride?

Pony,

Go up about 2 lbs. on air pressure, remove the left rear spring rubber or go up 1 turn on the track-bar, and don't dive turn 3 quite so hard.

Re: Best $400 I have ever spent.

Those HT's are crap.. I have a set on my Suburban that I am replacing this week. I did get 57K out of them but they are noisy as can be and not particularly good performers. I had a set of HLs on my Expedition that were great tires with the exception of handling water. they acted like a waterski. Not good when travelling 65 in a top heavy SUV.. I did get 65+K out of those.

I am moving on to a set of Michelin LTX m/s to the tune of about $800. I love getting new tires..

** didn't notice this was an old one..
