Re: Best winterizing technics after this winter ?

when I hear red winged black birds again, I will know it's getting closer to test my winterization skills.... I had an outboard before,,not much to that, keep it verticle... lots of discussion with sterndrives,, about antifreeze vs nothing.... I thought, heck with it.. I'm going with air dont freeze.. seemed true to me, if there was ever a winter to test that theory, this one is it..... if the problem is ice expansion in engine blocks and manifolds that can crack , how does one combat that? remove as much of what can freeze as possible....= liquid...(anything) drain it................

Not sure I would use the RV antifreeze either. I used it when I had an I/O. Drained the block then poured the RV in until I heard it draining and let that completely drain out. Did it just in case there was a pocket of water or two in the block. Poured it down the intake hose and hoses on the water pump. It sat in those hoses all winter.

Anyway, I have an open container of RV that's about half full in my attached insulted garage. Yep, it was slushy. I was a little shocked to be honest.

Got a call from a guy that has a cabin up here, his furnace wouldn't kick in. He has a high efficiency furnace with an external water trap. He had poured RV in the trap and it too was slush. One of the tubes appeared to be plugged with ice which is keeping his furnace from firing up, I believe..

At any rate, all the slush made me loose any confidence in the pink stuff.....

the more posts I read about what you experienced and saw with your own eyes,, -ie pink stuff freezing,, the happier I am that I chose Bondo's method- "air dont freeze"... plugs on the engine blocks are on the bottom of the block for a reason......."gravity",, when your empty and dripping out those holes, it's empty.. removing top hose and blow it out makes you feel better, but probably not necessary,, in most cases even with pink stuff, if it slushes some, its unlikely that anyone fills up the block so darn full with pink that it's got no where to go,,, the instruction manual (at least mine) said to drain it for long winter storage, did not say put pink in there

I have to be honest, i am regretting my decision to leave my boat in the driveway this winter as opposed to the mine that i normally opted for which stays a toasty 55 degrees year round.

I drained everything in the engine however im still nervous and will be until the spring when i fire it back up.

Thank god im moving to Texas

This topic came up in Man Cave BS'n while watching my buddy feeding his new outdoor wood burner. He used 114gals of the RV antifreze just in case he couldn't get home in a couple days, when I left i checked a new gal i left outside . Then was more pleased with the antifreeze windshild wiper fluid I used to load my garden tractor tires for plowing and that was the summer blend .

Chose to not use antifreeze and drain water. I now store in the mines that have a constant temp of 60 degrees and a relative humidity of 54% year round

Welcome to this area! Several lakes within 30 miles or so of FW, even more at 50-60 miles. Need some rain though, most are 7-8 feet low right now.

6 months $690.00. Don't have to winterize two engines, water system or shrink wrap. Put the cockpit cover on and it's the same way when i get it out in March.

Re: Best winterizing technics after this winter ?

All of this cold weather certainly has made me wonder how well everything will hold up come spring. This past year was my first year of maintaining my own boat and after debating back and forth I did go with the antifreeze method after a local marina owner said it's the only way he does it. Nonetheless I have wondered in spring how would I know if I did sustain any damage? Would I know immediately after trying to fire her up or would it not rear its ugly head until further into the season?

Yep. Controlled storage

Apperantly your from the area beings you know where i park the boat?

Indeed. I had mine in the general area that was not controlled. Molded a good bit, but at this point i wish i would have just accepted the mold and taken it back. Keeping it out this year has made me far more worried about spring.

Whereabouts do you do most of your boating? Im mostly in the city pool but sometimes near the beaver river and towards wv..

Second marina on the left when you come in the Beaver. Outside docking. March is a good time to get your deposit in for next season. If the mold was on your cloth, next time spray it all with Lysol and try to take it in dry.
