Boaters World is going out of business and they are liquidating their inventory. Went to my local store (Columbia, SC) Friday and bought a two person towable. The sign claims they are offering 20 - 50% off of the ORIGINAL PRICE. The price sticker, dated 3/15/2009, said $209.99 and they knocked 20% off for a selling price of $167.92. After getting it home, I found a different price sticker on the other side of the box. This one, dated 7/31/2008 said the price was $179.99. So they had clearly been selling this item for $179.99 for the last 7 months and they jacked the price up 17% before offering the discount of 20%.

Now I realize liquidation companies buy all the inventory and sell it in cases like this. And I realize they jack prices up before offering their discounts. But in this case, I had proof the item was selling at the lower price before the liquidation.

So I went back there to argue the ORIGINAL PRICE was $179.99 and they should have taken 20% off of that for a selling price of $143.92. The kids in the store kind of laughed it off and said all sales were final. I insisted on talking to a manager so they rang up their manager, Billie Sue Moore, who was not in the store. I politely stated my case, but Ms. Moore did not take too kindly to being called while she was away from the store. She became more and more irate as the conversation progressed and was yelling and swearing at me by the time the call ended.

So caveat emptor at Boaters World. I used to like that store and was sorry to hear they were going under. Maybe it was because of managers like Billie Sue Moore.

Unfortunately the store manager was apparently stressed and unloaded on you, however she probably had little or no control and to top it off, she will be out of a job soon! Stressfull times!

It was the same deal with Circuit City. I'd went in armed with pricing for similar items from other stores, the Circuit City liquidation pricing was no different that the other stores 'regular' prices. Man, that was a tough choice - buy from a chain that won't be around in another month, or for the same price buy from a company that I have every reason to believe will still be in business years from now.

Listen to him Folks, I purchased a Columbia rain jacket, their tag read Regular price $99 Sale price $59. I should have been smarter than that. Nice jacket but no way was it worth $100. Live and learn

Thanks for the post, I've had a similar experience at my BW store.

Dont expect any help from them on warranty or service related items on electronics. I got burned on this with my Lowrance GPS. They also never gave me my captains club points when I bought it a few months back. I'd make sure everything works before you leave the store.

My experience has not been inverse of what you gentleman are stating. I went to BW yesterday and did found many deals compare to other stores. Actually, I got me the tach I have been wanting to get for a while so I was very familiar with the average price of it of $55.00. I got it for $32.00. I also checked a few props and the prices before the discount were competitive to say the least. The folks at the store were very helpful as usual. Very willing to talk about what they perception of the "going out of bussines" situation. I feel for them...

Liquidation prices are generally from retail prices, not from a already discounted prices. Also, you need to do your homework before you go buying stuff. It is clear sales are final so if you buy something dont try to return it. Manufacturer warranties are still in effect so you are not out of luck if an item is defective, you just cant return it to the store...
Sunedog, sounds to me like you go a discount that you felt it was fair then you go wanting a larger discount? You wonder why the manager was upset? Please...

I dont work for BW.

My point. They are very clear, sales are final, you have a plain clear price in the tag, research what you are buying then dont blame the company if after buying the item you think it should be cheaper... It is on you...

I always take for granted that this situation occurs when there is a going out of business sale. It is harder to dupe people these days with the internet in existance. Amazingly we got a couple items from the Circuit City closing that were legitimate deals to my suprise. I always say that business don't know how to or aren't actually intersted in liquidating. To me, if you use that word, it should be pennys on the dollar. The best marine liquidation I saw was a local marina going out of business and my dad got like 6 aluminum props for pennies on the dollar for his Bayliner many years ago. We ended putting a ski prop on and still haven't used the others which still sit in the shed at the lake.

Gentlemen, It is sad to see any business fail.

Okay people are taking their frustrations out because of Boaters World. This is not the place to do it. No more please.

It is the policy of iboats not to bash anyone even our own competition.
