Re: beyond the plug club.

First time out last year, I had kept the boat at the in laws for about a month as I was working on a few things. Me and my brother in law were getting ready to head to the lake and started out down the road... which was dirt and full of potholes... and the boat almost bounced right off the trailer. Oops, forgot to put on the strap.

Re: beyond the plug club.

My fishing pal Felix jackknifed his trailer and twisted his tongue a past weekend. I told him not to try and bend it back.Just put a new one on. Well it was the day of his sisters wedding and both of us were in the party. He told his mother that we were going to do some bass fishing on Eire and would be back by noon decorate the cars take showers and be ready for 2:30. She said she'd kill us if we were late. Well fishing was a blast we were off the water by 11:00 am ...1/2 hr drive home, No problem. To make a long story short we hit a bump I looked over at Felix to see a 18' boat and trailer pass us, hit the shoulder of the road, jump the ditch the tongue buried itself 4ft. into the ditch, both back straps pulled so hard that they bent the back of the trailer up on a 45 degree ,boat shot off the trailer taking the winch with it and landed on a fella's front yard. Well the the $&^*$# are we going to do now? Needless to say we left it till Sunday with the fella's permission and when we went back he had pulled the trailer out with a tractor. True story.

Re: beyond the plug club.

Have any of you ever ran up and over the bow stop while loading?
TC

ROFLOL,, Yep,, did that last year. The water was getting really low at the ramp so I set my bunks back 18 inches and slid the boat back. When I put in, I used one side of the ramp but when I took it out I used the other which turns out was deeper. I came up to the trailer and gave it a little juice and went right past the bow stop. For some strange reason I left the hatch open on the Tahoe. Had I not, I would have done some major damage. You could hear the laughter at the dock so I casually walked to the back to the boat and jumped in the water. I grabbed the boat and slid it back and then waded out and cranked it on. I figured I might as well finish the show!!!.

The trick to screwing up is to make it look like you planned it. When you leave the plug out just tell people you're a product tester and this week it's bilge pumps.

Re: beyond the plug club.

i have left the bait, my cigs, life jackets, tackle box, boat key, fish finder, and for about a month last summer i ran it without transom straps ........dog chewed them up and i was paying $4 a gallon for gas to go fishing so they got postponed for about 7-8 fishing trips....now thats the bass boat.

in my 2 lil fishin boats ive forgotten everything listed above (of course) plus a few VERY important things like battery for f/f and troller, gas tank, fuel line (had gas tank that day), and the worst thing i forgot was a eng....

i had decided to switch everything from the 14' aliminum (with a dull aluminum finish) to my 13.5' camoed aluminum ...........well i took the 18hp evin off the 14' and put it on the saw horse then i took the 9.8hp merc off the 13' and put it on the 14'................... yep then i went right in the house.

next morning at 5 a.m. ,everything switched and loaded-along with a good double check just to make sure, i got in the truck and headed for the creek and to my surprise the motor was gone ........the worst part was when i called the wife at 5:30 and said "honey would you look outside and see if my 18 is on the saw horse, cause if it aint either someone stole it or i forgot to bolt it on"......after i got a good what for about her having just gotten back to sleep, she laughed hysterically until i hung up the phone.

.......and of course i have forgotten the plug. its not so bad in my 2 lil boats because you know it immediately since everything is wide open you may get a 1/2" in it......... but in a bass boat-----thats no fun.......until the plug is installed and the bilge pump is doing its job......then it is hilarious!

I launched my boat with the ex-wife in it out into Waterbury Reservoir with the plug out. That had nothing to do with the "ex" part BTW :D but suffice it to say she was not laughing.

years ago with my first boat i forgot to pull up the anchor and we were cursing along probably 25-30 mph and kept wondering whats that banging noise? it was the anchor rope hitting the bottom of the boat luckily i just pull it back in no harm done

Re: beyond the plug club.

Went fishing with the next door neighbor last year. He has a real nice bass boat. As usual, he unhooked the straps, backed down the ramp and hooked up the launch rope. Backed all the way down, boat came off the trailer and we stood there in amazement as it just floated away. Seems he hooked the launch rope to the trailer instead of the boat :D:D

I stood there and laughed and said, Looks like you're going swimming. :p:p:p

Re: beyond the plug club.

Short answer..Yes I have gone beyond the "Plug Club"
Long answer..I took it to the graduate level..
Skip if you don't want the long answer.;)

Back in the late 90s, a friend stored his boat (17 foot I/O) in my backyard while he was deployed to Bosnia. He wanted me to take it out every once and a while so, one day, I grabbed a friend and his young son and headed to the lake.

Launching went very quick and we proceeded outside the no-wake zone in short time. As we approached the edge of the no-wake zone, I heard a strange "ticking" sound coming from the engine compartment. Investigation quickly revealed that spinning engine parts make "ticking" sounds when they are in contact with a foot of lake water. I had joined the club.

So..no need to panic..I'll just get us up on plane and try to get some of the water out of the bilge so we can get back to the shallows and put the plug in.
With that great plan in my head, I applied all the throttle that little Volvo could handle. The Captain always has a plan.

To my great dismay, the boat would not get on plane. I glanced around and noticed I was still trimmed 'Full-up". Problem solved! I hit the the trim button and was greeted with nothing but straining hydraulic sounds. The drive would not trim down. I began to come to the realization that the only solution left required being very wet and very cold.

I shut down the motor, grabbed the plug and moved to the swimming platform. As I began to lower myself into the cold water, I saw the reason that the drive would not trim down. The transom/drive guards were still attached to the drive! Thoroughly embarrased now, I lowered myself into the cold water and secured the plug before I sank my friends boat.

Once I secured the plug I decided that there was no reason that my crew needed to know about the drive guards. Still in the water, I casually and matter-of-factily asked my friend if he would run the drive all the way up. He had a puzzled look but complied with the request of "The Captain". With the pressure released from the guards, I quickly removed the guards and slipped them under my shirt and began to climb from the cold water.

As I clambered over the transom, I briefly lost my balance sending the bright red guards tumbling to the floor of the boat. With complete innocence my friend's young son noticed the red guards and asked, "Mr. Dave, what do those things do?" With that, his father came to the back of the boat and said, "Son, those are guards that keep the propeller 'thingy' from hitting the road when the boat is on the tailer. They also, (now looking at my red face), make it really tough to get a boat to plane." I was completely busted.

With all crisis' averted and all embarrassments fully established, I turned on the bilge pump and we restarted a great day on the lake. While the day ended well I will never forget the embarrassment of neglecting my Captain duties. My "quick launch" had nearly sunk my friend's boat and put the safety of my "crew" in jeopardy. While it important to clear a ramp quickly, I will never rush myself to the point skipping key steps again.

Once. launched the alumacraft bass boat for a benifit tourney. noticed water in the livewell and outside of the livewell. Forgot the plug. Fired it up, took off till the water drained out then pulled the carrot from the lunchbox and jammed it in the plug hole, fished the rest of the day and never took on a drop.......glad the wife didn't give me an apple instead...

Re: beyond the plug club.

1- I forgot to remove the muff , causing damage to the propeller and overheating

2- I forgot trim up the outdriver , causing broken bottom on it

3- I forgot bilge pump while at dock , causing 100s of saltwater gl in the boat

4- Forgot jetski remote lock and realized once in the water ( ski was locked so it won't start

5-Forgot bait inside my truck , after 3 days it smell so bad it took me 3 days of exhaustive cleaner

I don't remember what else but im sure there is plenty more

Re: beyond the plug club.

 Ok, I have a new one, I drove fifty miles to the lake. set camp up then headed around to unload boat. stopped at the top of the ramp out of the way to prep boat for launch. while I was installilng plug and undoing transom straps the little light over my head clicked on. the last time out I had dinged the prop and removed it and sent it out for repair! Yep had to pay marina price for a prop. would have really felt stupid if I had made it into the water!:eek:

Re: beyond the plug club.

Back in the old days... (haha love that)...
After a successful launch at our busy ramp I was hurrying to untie the ropes and get off the dock so one of the seemingly endless number of folks could go about their business. Bow line off... spring line off and bumpers in... stern line off and I went to hop in. My shorts got caught on the stern cleat... I was balancing on the side. Sure enough I couldn't reach to grab anything so I went over backwards into the water with my shorts still hanging from the cleat. It was busy so I jumped up on to the swim grid, quickly put my shorts back on and started to back out. Half the people were laughing and the others were giving me dirty looks for swimming at a boat ramp... like I purposely decided to have a quick dip! :p

Re: beyond the plug club.

Worst thing I ever did, 4:00 am, about 30 degrees, hurrying to get the boat in at a mudhole launching area to duck hunt. Made 3 mistakes - 1) forgot one transom strap, 2) unlatched the winch handle, 3)forgot to unhook the strap from the boat. My dad backed the boat in and I would be pushing the boat off into the water, boat would not move. Puzzled, I thought it was frozen to the bunks (this happens a lot) so I lean into it and give the bow a mighty shove. This is when the winch handle rotated about 359 degrees coming to a stop just below my left eyebrow. Somewhat stunned, I realize I have made mistakes 2 and 3. Then I realized that I made mistake number 1, so I jumped in the boat and headed to the transom. Rolled up one sleeve and shoved my arm into the freezing water reaching for the strap. Then I felt a warm trickle running down my nose. Yes it was blood. Not wanting to panick my dad, I continued and we went out into the bottoms to hunt. Had to pull out the first aid kit and tape the gash closed until we finished.

Re: beyond the plug club.

I posted this in the did you leave the plug out thread so that pre qualifies me

It is kinda cool to realize you are not the only one to try to turn your pride and joy into the titanic .... I did this as well... I bought my first boat last June , Not running , after 3 weeks of learning how the eletrical system works I finally came to the conclusion the boat had been swamped and the entire engine eletrical system on the motor was fried. This is on a 1994 JetSport merc engine by Force. Kinda hard to find parts at a reasonable price. So while I was shopping for parts online I got a notice from the town that I had 3 days to move the boat due to town regulations of parking a boat in front of a residence. I live in a townhouse on a canal ..No problem .. the Marina is 1/4 mile away by water .. put her in and row to my dock huh ?? Well I put in and parked the trailer .. nice day 4 other people waiting to launch . I began rowing my little 14 foot boat and got about 100 yards from the launch and realized I was standing in water. Well if you have ever seen Gilligans Island when Gilligan can run on water .. I looked like that rowing back. Got her back and tied off ,2 guys still waiting to launch , I told them , new boat taking on water , One helped and the second just laughed , We got it out and I found the place in the bilge bay where the plug was missing . Ok easy fix , the guy who laughed said " nice move" as he was parking his trailer while water was still pouring out of my boat ... As he walked away he made another comment and I was going to go confront him until I saw just the tip of the bow of his Jet Ski he had just put in being the only thing above water ... I just left .

PS .. MANY thanks to the people launching the Grady White who did help me

Now for my beyond the plug move :
Living on a quiet canal and having the boat docked 50 feet from my porch I decided to get a 5" orbital buffer so I could keep up with the finish on the boat . Yes I kept her white and shining like glass . I decided to put a coat of wax on her one saturday and everything was going well . Myboat is a closed bow and I was just finishing the bow and decided it was time for a beer ... went in got one .. well two .. what the hell three .. Grabbed the fourth and headed out to finish the boat . The buffer now seemed to be fighting me ! But I overcame the mighty power of the buffer and finished the boat .So I thought. I realized I never untied the bow cleat to clean under the rope .. NOOOO Problem . untied the bow and was happily buffing 5 square inches when the buffer took off into the water , Well really the boat moved and I ran out of extension chord. Fearing the worst I grabbed the side of the windshield (with 4th beer in hand) and tried to get in the boat . Well the water was not that cold and when I came up the first thing I heard was my neighbor shouting "GOOD SAVE" ... I kept the beer above water !
