brand new as in both the engine and me as a boater.

First of all, there are no problems with the motor. I have about 15 hours on it. I hadn't checked the oil for at least 5-6 hours - the other day I noticed that there was too much oil - about an inch worth on the dipstick.

I called the dealer and his theory was that some gas had gotten into the crankcase. One day I did tighten up the gas tank vent and left the hose hooked up to the motor. Of course the tank looked like a beach ball after it heated up for a day. I immediately learned to vent the tank and remove the hose from the motor during storage.

I took out all of the oil immediately and I determined that I had almost a pint too much oil. There was no "gas" smell or shean to it. The consistency of the oil was...well - oil -like.

I filled the reservoir with the proper amount of oil and ran the engine recently - it ran fine - no smoke, smell, etc.

First of all, how does gas get into the crankcase? and, secondly, I probably put several hours on the engine during the overfill but I didn't run it very fast because I am still in the break in period... any chance I damaged the rings, etc.

Thank you for your efforts on my behalf.

When I first got my motor it was overfilled by the dealer by approx. 3/4 of a quart. The list of mistakes by my dealer grew from that point.

It's very much recomended to change your oil early soon after initial break-in. Looking at the oil in sunlight mine had minute metallic "glitter" the first oil change. I've not seen it again in over 250 hours.

If it doesn't smell like gas it probably doesn't have fuel contamination. The oil capacity with a filter change is 2.11 quarts. I put 2.0 even and call it full.
Change the oil and filter and monitor the situation.

Thanks for replying..

The oil that I removed did not smell like gas...so it was probably a dealer over fill.

I didn't check for shavings...

Appreciate it...

My neighbor at the lake had his 40hp Honda fry on him the first time out this year(a year old)after he had taken it in for service last fall.
Apparently they forgot to add any oil? He being a non mechanical type he never thought of checking.

Well, I'm reasonably mechanical, but mechanical or not, I will never crank that motor again unless I have checked the oil - I know better.

I love my dealer - no complaints - but, shame on me for not checking it sooner.

That's too bad about your neighbor - I wonder who is going to come up with the $2-3k for that mistake?

Thanks.
