Re: Bilge Pump Hose Location

What a fricken nightmare. So I go to my friends house and grab all his big drill bits. My hose is 3/4 and the O.D. of the fitting was just a hair bigger than 1". So I go through all his bits once I get to my house, no 1". Closest bits are a 1 1/4" hole saw type bit, and a 15/16th" flat bit. So I go with the flat, drill through from the outside in (already predrilled a hole with a regular bit). So I go to put the fitting in, and the fitting isn't nearly long enough to go through. It easily needs another inch. So then I have to go to west marine, and instead of using the $1.29 fitting, I end up with a $30 brass fitting. So I come home and get ready to install them, and the angles of the holes are not perpendicular to the outside of the hull, meaning the external piece of the fitting isn't sitting flush. So I start messing around widening it with my fiberglass cutting dremel bit. This was supposed to be a REAL quick job. Just a quick drill glue done. I'm going to try to finish this mess tomorrow. Hopefully.

Most thru-hull fittings are threaded for a hull thickness of up to 1 1/2". How thick is your hull? Maybe the inside is coated with foam. If that's the case, all you need to do is scrape it off down to the fiberglass itself. If you try to install it over the foam it'll never seal properly anyway.

It's about 3 inches. There is a layer of foam but it's between to solid layers of fiberglass. The brass fitting I got is like 6 inches long so it's overkill but at least it works. They said I could cut it, but I'm probably just going to leave it as it

So I got the holes just right and the 5200 all in there, and the fitting actually looks pretty good. Better than I thought. I used way too much 5200, but I can never judge that stuff. So much of it squeezed out when I tightened the fitting. But I went out on the boat today, and tested the pump with a few bucket fulls of water. Everything seemed to work great. I just need some clamps on the hose to keep it from bouncing around. Right now it goes from the fitting directly to the pump. And the brass doesn't even look that goofy, it kind of blends in.

Brass tarnishes real easy. That's why most brass or bronze marine parts are chrome plated. Boats are supposed to look spiffy....LOl.

Polish it to a high luster with Flitz, then paint it with clear laquor. It'll look good for a few years that way.
