Bilge taking on water

Originally thought the transom drain plug was leaking (it's one of those cheap plastic ones with the rubber "O" Ring)
Found out that is not the case today.
It would appear to be poor design.....the bilge pump outlet is way too low in the hull (below the rub strip)
Is there a way to plug off the existing outlet so I can put one higher up?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is the outlet below the water line?

The outlet is just above the water line about 1 1/2 inches so when I get the boat loaded down or it is choppy out it takes on water......do they make a check valve for the bilge pump ??

check valves can restrict flow, not considered a good thing to have on bilge pumps.

you should have a loop in your bilge hose immediately before it exits the hull. the loop is to prevent water from backing in. the loop should be higher than the thru-hull. water enters, has to go uphill and can't make it.

that said, you may want to move your thru-hull higher if it's that low. mine is below the rub rail as well, but prob more like a 1.5' above the waterline.

I think check valves are a no-no for bilge outlet plumbing, not sure though.

One thing you can do is look at your outbound hose routing. If it does not rise above the thru-hull fitting much then you could change that to go a little bit higher than what you think is the highest water line you experience in those conditions then down to the thru-hull fitting. Have to be careful there though, that does increase the pump "head pressure" and going too high may slow the pump down too much.
